Fridge Horror

  • Mrs. Lejon is essentially forgotten in the story once Skorpan arrives in Nangijala. Seeing the events from her perspective is horrifying though. First her husband goes to sea, and it's implied that he died. Then her youngest son gets tuberculosis and will not survive it. Then her house burns down, and during the fire her older son saves the younger son' life at the expense of his own. So soon thereafter she is in a new home with one son in the ground and the other soon to follow. Adding to this, if Nangijala does exist, Mr. Lejon is nowhere to be seen so presumably he's already gone to Nangilima. Once Mrs. Lejon finally dies she still won't be reunited with her family because all of them have already died once more.

Fridge Logic

  • There are several things in the story that point to the fact that Nangijala doesn't exist and everything that happens there happens in Skorpan's mind. The two brothers live there alone (in the movie Jonatan at least seems to be in his late teens - he's 13 in the book!) and when Jonatan leaves for Briar Rose Valley he leaves his nine year-old brother by himself. The resistance group assign the most significant role to a 13 year-old (barely better in the movie where he's older), and said 13 year-old drags his nine year-old brother with him on some very dangerous missions. There are several points in the story where sheer coincidence drives the plot (looking at you, chapter eight!), and one might wonder how come Veder and Kader never kill Skorpan despite him being caught by them doing something that carries a death penalty. The whole story ending with Skorpan dying again, "seeing the light" this time around. In the movie Jonatan pauses before answering Nangijala when Skorpan asks where your spirit goes after you've died, heavily implying that he's making it all up on the spot. Skorpan also worries after Jonatan's dead that this was the case, and it's just a story he told.
