Fridge Brilliance:

Fridge Horror:

  • If Sam had killed Jake the first time (say, that blow to Jake's head doing too much damage), to what lengths would the Yellow-Eyed Demon have gone to to get the highly-moral, strong-willed Sam to do as he said the way he did Jake in the episode are disturbing to imagine. Especially considering how the Yellow-Eyed Demon manipulated Jake into doing he wants by threatening to kill Jake's family in a nightmarish way until Jake agreed to do what the demon wanted. If Sam had refused, the demon would have likely targeted Bobby and Dean, who would've stood as little a chance against a surprise-attack from the powerful, Nigh-Invulnerable demon as Jake's family would have.
  • When the Devil's Gate is opened, we see that what's inside, the portal, is literally a hole straight to Hell itself, making one wonder exactly how many demons roamed Earth before the Gate was built to keep them in — and what would have happened if an ordinary human happened to wander too close, or even fall into, said hole.
  • What about Jake's mother and little sister? At best, Jake's body is recovered, identified, and turned over to them, but he is disgraced as a military deserter and they will be left forever wondering why he left, why he didn't come to them, why and by whom he was killed. At worst, Jake stays missing forever and they will be left forever wondering what could've possibly happened to him.
  • The Yellow-Eyed Demon was about to kill Dean with the Colt when John's spirit intervened, which, thanks to the Deal with the Devil Dean had just made, would have meant an instant trip to Hell for poor Dean.
  • As pointed out by Eric Kripke in the episode commentary for the previous episode, after a year of Demonic Possession, the poor hospital janitor unwillingly hosting the Yellow-Eyed Demon is also killed by Dean with the Colt (subtly referenced in how the yellow in the eyes vanishes, leaving two very human eyes staring forward). None of the characters point this out because they are too caught up in the moment, but remembering how upset they were by causing the deaths of the demon's children's hosts at the end of the previous season, it's a bit jarring to see them celebrating over the dead man and aiming insults at his corpse.

Fridge Logic:

  • Why did Bobby and Dean remain in Cold Oak overnight instead of heading back to somewhere with food, electricity, and running water, where they would be much less likely to be ambushed by the Yellow-Eyed Demon or Jake?
  • Where did Dean get the bottle of whiskey he was drinking in Cold Oak? Even if he had a bottle stashed in the Impala, it seemed a fairly long walk from Cold Oak to where they left the Impala, and he must have gotten the bottle out of the car before Bobby left to get food.
  • How did Bobby get from Cold Oak to his junkyard in Sioux Falls, when he and Dean drove to Cold Oak together in the Impala?
  • Where did Jake get the tent and the change of clothing?
  • When Dean convinces Sam to eat something, they not only have the bucket of chicken and 2 bottles of cola that Bobby brought and the bottle of whiskey Dean was drinking, but also now have a pizza and containers of Chinese food. Did Dean stop for take-out on his way back from the crossroad or did Dean find a pizza place and a Chinese restaurant that delivers to a haunted ghost town that has to be reached by walking through the woods?
  • Given that there are witches and other humans who could cross the iron railway and are willing to align themselves with the forces of Hell, it seems odd that the demons had not previously managed to disrupt the massive Devil's Trap which has existed for over 140 years.
  • If Ellen retrieved Ash's map from a safe in the basement of the Roadhouse, why didn't Bobby and Dean see the safe or for that matter a basement when they searched the ruins of the Roadhouse last episode?
  • The Yellow-Eyed Demon needed to give Jake the Magic Colt so that he could open the gate. But why did he (the demon) need to leave the bullet in it?
