This episode explains a hell of a lot about Chakotay's personality. He's been playing the Only Sane Man since childhood, when he was expected to watch his mentally ill grandfather, which goes worlds to explaining why he doesn't seem fazed by his eccentric shipmates on Voyager. His fear of insanity also explains why one of the few times he does seem genuinely frightened or worried are when someone or something is messing with his mind (as seen in "Unity," "Waking Moments," and "Memorial," for instance.)
- The boxing thing also explains how he kept snarking at Culluh while the Kazon were brutally interrogating him — he's used to being punched in the face.
