Fridge Brilliance

  • The new sensate character played by Sylvester McCoy introduces himself as "The Old Man of Hoy" and refers to the worldwide sensate network he is a part of as "The Archipelago." An archipelago is a geography term which describes a... cluster of islands. Guess what his name refers to.
  • Kala and Wolfgang often find themselves instinctively visiting each other whenever they simultaneously visit a bathroom. Kala lampshades this fact early in season two. It may have something to do with Lito being a part of both their subconscious minds, and since bathrooms are are especially significant for Lito as per his encounter in the Diego Rivera Museum, both Kala and Wolfgang subconsciously imbue the same emotion into bathrooms. A throwaway line from Amanita reveals that she and Nomi first kissed in a hotel bathroom also, compounding the emotional significance for all involved.
  • From the Christmas episode, Sun defiantly continues to kick the wall, despite the guard threatening more time in solitary confinement for doing so. Under normal circumstances, spending more time isolated would have an adverse effect on a person. But by her very nature as a sensate, Sun can never truly be isolated. So the threat of spending more time confined holds no power over her: if she gets lonely, any one of her seven clustermates can pop in to keep her company at a moment's notice; or if she needs a change of scenery, she can visit where they are.
  • In the second episode, Nomi posts in her blog about the Pride Parade. The Title Drop "I am also a we" is used in conjunction with the sense of belonging of the Pride. Now all the sensates in her cluster were born in August 8th, wich means their zodiacal sign is Leo. And a pack of lions is also called "pride." Furthermore, Capheus tells Kala that he first fell in love with Jean-Claude when watching the film Lionheart.
  • The cluster is initially protected by Angelica shooting herself in the head. This is echoed in conversation when we first meet several sensates in the cluster:
    • Riley is having a conversation with some friends after her set. One of them comments that another has some drugs that will, quote, "blow our fucking brains out".
    • Lito is in the middle of shooting a scene, he flubs his line, instead saying "I've come to blow your fucking brains out" and later commenting in private that he has no idea where that came from.
    • After sex, Nomi says to her lover, "You just fucked my brains out."
    • When he wakes up in the first scene we see him, Will sits up with his gun in hand and holds it flat (barrel against his temple) alongside his head.
  • Will doesn't recognize Lito when they first officially meet, even though it was after the psychic orgy. While he was certainly responsive to Lito and Wolfgang at the time, the blocking of the scene put most of his attention on Nomi, so it makes sense that she is the participant he remembers most.
  • Wolfgang really likes swimming. It's the main recreational activity he is seen doing throughout the first season and it's never really commented on or made clear why. But, during Wolfgang's birth scene, it is shown that his mother had him via a water birth. Swimming is literally the first thing he ever did outside the womb.
  • Given that Lito's entire family was too engrossed with the television to pay attention to his birth, especially his mother, it makes perfect sense that he would grow up to become a telenovela actor. It was his way of gaining his family's attention. He's smiling when he recalls his birth, so he's apparently not mad about it.
  • The full scope of Lito's talent for obfuscation and deception is revealed when you realise he is listening to Steiner making fun of Felix by calling him a cocksucker. It's a testament to Lito's self control that, as a gay man who had previously recounted to Nomi his experience of giving fellatio to Hernando, after their first kiss, as a treasured one, that he can suffer Steiner's hatefulness so starkly.
  • Sensates will appear when other members of the cluster are in danger. When Lito puts a gun in his mouth, none appear. This seems strange in the moment, but when he pulls the trigger, the gun turns out to be a lighter. It was his, so he subconsciously knew that he was in no danger. He was in so much pain over the breakup that his conscious mind didn't process that information. Later, Riley's intention to commit suicide by a very real gun calls all of her cluster-mates.
  • Sun does most of the fighting but whenever disarming somebody with a gun it's Will who handles it. Which makes sense: gun disarming techniques wouldn't be common in Sun's discipline but are standard training for a cop. Additionally: Sun, Will, and Wolfgang all have different fighting styles. Sun's martial arts are the strongest, Will uses police takedowns, gun control and basic judo, while Wolfgang streetfights like a rough and tumble thug. This is further highlighted when Sun is nearly killed by assassins hired by her brother, Wolfgang steps in to help her because he has more experience in handling skilled assassins.
  • When considering how the creators generally tend to view their work, and with the theme of connectedness, it's not much of a surprise that each of the protagonists' individual arcs also represent a different brand of cinema and film style. For example, Will's plot is a typical American Police Procedural while Wolfgang's plot is a gritty German Criminal Procedural. Not to mention Kala (straight-up Bollywood), Lito (Mexican Telenovela), Sun (K-drama), Riley (Nordic Noir), Capheus (Rags to Riches), and Nomi (Indie Movie).
  • Nomi says she still has the scars on her back from the burns which resulted in her stopping to try and fit into the role expected of her and embrace her gender. Given that she has had gender reassignment surgery, she most probably had a chance to remove or cover up the scars surgically at the same time, but she didn't, because as she said, what happened in that locker room made her into the woman she is today, so she kept them as a memento.
  • The song that plays when Riley and Will connect in the nightclub is called "World Falls Apart". Suffice to say, the lyrics fit them well.
    When the world falls apart
If you should ever feel so broken that you can't go on
    If your world falls apart
I will hold you in my arms like a friend
  • Steiner's homophobia does make a bit of sense when you realize that he grew up in East Germany which was under the command of the Soviet Union.
  • Why was Will's father able to sense Will just before his death? Because, as Nyx alluded to way back in the first episode, DMT is a sapien's way into the psycellium. In the sense8 universe, at least, the (in reality, pseudoscientific) hypothesis that death causes the body to flood with DMT is correct.
  • At first glance, it seems that sensates would make excellent spies or field agents: They can share information instantly using their telepathy, they can coordinate their movements perfectly, and they can call upon each other's skills and talents when needed. However, the series does a good job of demonstrating exactly why this is not the case. First, sensates share a deep bond with each other and due to this are generally more in tune with their emotions than others. This would make it difficult for them to distance themselves emotionally from their targets, and if even one member of the cluster has misgivings it can affect the whole group. Second, they are extremely vulnerable to psychic attacks from other sensates, allowing enemy sensates to spy on them or even Break Them by Talking.
  • Many of the first sensate experiences by the members of the cluster (after their rebirth) reflect the strongest relationship that they later formed with other members:
    • Will heard the electronic music that was coming from Riley's concert.
    • Kala heard rain and thunder that took place at the funeral Wolfgang attended. Unresolved Sexual Tension ensues.
    • Sun saw the chicken landing in front of Capheus. They later had an important conversation when they had a hard decision to make, and Sun helped Capheus on two very critical occasions. They both affirmed this especially close bond in the Christmas special.
    • Lito felt sexually aroused due to Nomi having sex at that moment. They later bond especially well due to both having to deal with their own sexuality.
    • Although technically Wolfgang's first experience is the siren he heard (from Will's cop car) when cracking the safe, he later had a craving for Indian food when Kala was at a party with her family and fiancé.
    • Riley, Capheus and Nomi seem to be exceptions: Riley and Capheus's first experiences were both in San Francisco with Nomi, and Nomi's first experience was arguably roaming and singing on the streets with Riley, but they didn't develop a particularly strong bond afterwards. However, Riley's first visit was in Chicago with Will and that of Capheus took place in the boxing ring with Sun.
  • So, Lito is a bit of a drama queen - but when we meet his mother, it becomes clear where he's got it from. From how the scene is set up, she must've collected and arranged the clippings, decorated the house and set the table for at least a dozen guests she knew wouldn't show up, gone all out on her dress and make-up and prepared a dramatic speech for an audience of three. Just to have a dramatic and heartwarming scene with her son. If anything, Lito is toning it down.

Fridge Horror

  • When reminiscing about Iceland with Shugs and Bambi, Riley describes how she misses the winter, so still and serene, and you can hear your own heartbeat... You have to wonder if the traumatic loss of her daughter on a snow-covered mountain was fresh in her mind.
