Fridge Brilliance

  • When explaining her friendship with Ben, Amelia sardonically notes that right when she thought maybe she could develop a crush on Ben, he mentioned that he was gay. Funny coincidence, right? Not so! Since Ben is actually Jeremy, Amelia's father, her having a crush on "Ben" would be the last thing he'd want. So, if he got so much as an inkling that that was where Amelia's feelings were heading, he'd want to shut it down real quick. Claiming "Ben" was gay would be a quick, easy out, and would guarantee to get Amelia to back off. Of course, Amelia turns out to be a lesbian, so it's a moot point, but Jeremy couldn't have known that at the time, so it was a good move on his part.

Fridge Sadness

  • While he is in a hell of his own making by refusing to tell Kate he's Amelia's father, and not wanting to own up to his wife about his infidelity, it's hard not to pity Jeremy on a second reading, once you have all the information. He lost his daughter, whom he was obviously very proud of and wanted to get to know better, and he can't talk about it with anyone. Kate at least could grieve openly and talk with her friends about it; Jeremy didn't even have that. One gets the impression he broke down at the funeral because it was his one and only chance to openly cry over Amelia's death; after that, he had to go back to just living his life and pretending like things are normal. Dude needs therapy.
