In the lab, everyone routinely wears eye protection while firing lasers, and at higher powers radiation protection too. However, when Kent goes into Dr. Hathaway's house, he's standing within a few feet of where the giant laser beam hits, and he looks up directly at the window the beam is coming in through, sparkling lights in the stained glass clearly indicating some of the laser is splitting off in all directions. It would be a miracle if Kent doesn't at the least have permanent damage to his vision, if not dangerous radiation exposure as well.
Little kids are shown playing in the popcorn at the end of the movie. The popcorn that involved windows bursting outwards in showers of broken glass, and whole pieces of the building coming apart in jagged bits of wood with nails protruding. Bits of glass and wood and nails now hidden within the mounds of popcorn the children are leaping into and rolling around in, and later carting away to eat.
Given how casually Decker orders George's death at the beginning of the film, he will likely have Hathaway killed to cover up the debacle. And that's not even factoring in if he discovers Hathaway was sleeping with his daughter.
