• Toula’s grandmother and her habits throughout the movie; hitting her son after mistaking him for a Turk and accusing him of kidnapping her in her first scene, sleeping with a knife under her pillow long after the Greco-Turkish War ended, randomly running away from home, and even frequently breaking into a neighbor’s house, are all Played for Laughs. But all of those things show that the poor lady is clearly still suffering from PTSD and possibly dementia, and her family either laughs it off or treats it as a mere nuisance.
