Fridge / Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day

  • Towards the end of the movie, Joe reveals that he initially made his money in fashion out of gentlemen's socks, and announces that he's leaving the extravagant world of fashion design for humbler pursuits within the clothing industry, arguing that "you know where you are with a good pair of socks." Given the ominous Foreshadowing towards World War II the movie engages in, it appears he made the switch at the right time; the outbreak of war severely curtailed the amount of fabrics available to fashion designers - particularly silk, which going by Edith's commentary during the fashion show, seems to be Joe's preferred material to design with - and the government sponsored more utilitarian and austere forms of clothing. Not entirely a bad time to stop being a flashy designer in favour of being a humble sock manufacturer.
