As a Moments subpage, all spoilers are unmarked as per policy. You Have Been Warned.
Fridge Brilliance
- The opening title card in Contingency states not to use the broadcast after November 13, 1970. That's not a significant date unless you notice it was a Friday the 13th.
- Lyndon Johnson was no longer president in 1970, so Richard Nixon would have to add his signature at some point. Either that or it was the beginning of Détente with the Soviets and the Department for the Preservation of American Dignity felt the broadcast would be irrelevant by then.
- How did the Animalistic Abomination in "Show For Children" survive the previous moons? Well, do you see any eyes on that thing?
- Alternatively, given that it clearly has a bill, the humanoid from “You Are On the Fastest Available Route” appears to have a beak if looked at a certain way, and the entity inside the moon in “Skywatching” resembles a chick inside its egg, the sparing of the creature in the second tomb may be because it’s one of the moon’s Mooks.
- The comet in Close has the Meaningful Name "57838 Eidolon," A Greek word essentially meaning a phantom or apparition. The word pareidolia is derived from it, and that word refers to a phenomena of the human mind to interpret a pattern where there is none. In Close, the comet has the appearance of a skull, or face, but as the info cards repeatedly note, these are only tricks of the light, and the pattern is the result of random shadows. In Real Sleep, a sequence tells the viewer to repeat the phrase there are no faces when bombarded with images of what are very obviously faces.
Fridge Horror
Contingency is full of this, utilizing it as the main form of horror.
- What threat could be so bad that the American government requires its people to commit suicide? The title card merely claims America should use the broadcast in any case of it being overrun. If it was a Soviet invasion, then this is a case of Better to Die than Be Killed and Honor Before Reason to the extreme. Either that or it could be something worse like an Eldritch Abomination.
- Several videos heavily imply and basically confirm that it's the latter.
- The police are going to force you into committing suicide if they can't kill you themselves, especially making sure your kids and pets will be axed.
- The mention that a 51st state does not exist implies either that the government anticipated a Divided States of America scenario and is going to force the entire population into a mass suicide pact, no stragglers, or it could also imply an Eldritch Abomination is influencing the minds of Americans to think there is a 51st state and the government is warning them not to trust it. However, it could also mean there is no other America to turn to and you have no choice but to commit suicide to escape a worse fate.
- When America first landed on the moon, it was jokingly referred to as "the 51st state." Considering what we learn about the moon later on, this might be what the 51st state is referring to.
- Word of God has since revealed that the '51st state' is 'death.' It's obvious in retrospect, as the above entries are misinterpreting the words used in the video; it doesn't say "there is no 51st state," it says "the 51st state is not a place."
- When America first landed on the moon, it was jokingly referred to as "the 51st state." Considering what we learn about the moon later on, this might be what the 51st state is referring to.
- The revelation that it was all an accidental broadcast and there may have been no threat at all still reveals that when the time comes, America will force its populace to go down with it. The garbled music recorded in the early 20th century implies the USA has been planning this scenario for a very long time.
- The contingency broadcast would make sense if it was a Secret Test of Character to prepare people for the apocalypse, and to perhaps save those that failed from a heavily implied Fate Worse than Death. The third party has hijacked the media, after all. Those that were skeptical instead of blindly follow it would be expected to do the same for future warnings. This doesn't apply to the people that flat out don't watch TV or haven't tuned in to the broadcasts, however.
- If you think about it, it's entirely possible that the first skeleton was Cadavre's girlfriend. She met the same fate that he did.
- As pointed out by a Youtube comment, the redesigned Local 58 logo looks like a person pointing to two circles which could represent two moons. What could the second moon be implying?
Fridge Logic
- If it is imperative, as Contingency claims, that every American commit suicide simultaneously and immediately, would that not also include the police supposedly to be sent to "ensure compliance?" Then again, this might argue that it was recorded in the event of a non-supernatural threat, where there is at least time to get things together before the event (that also gels with the note that the enemy may occupy buildings, which seems mundane by supernatural being standards).
- Not all police would be watching TV at the time the contingency broadcasted, so those that did would likely commit suicide. They did not specifically exclude any American groups. However, following that logic, what would happen to the non-Americans? How did they react to the whole thing? In the event that it wasn't a hoax, how would the government handle them anyways?
- If the message is for a Soviet invasion, why would the US government want all of its citizens to commit suicide instead of going Red Dawn on their asses? Surely, it would be better to make the occupation a living hell for the invaders instead of say "Better Dead than Red." Not to mention that the Soviet occupation probably wouldn't last long if Canada and Mexico have anything to say about it, not to mention the whole of NATO mobilizing in Europe.
