Fridge / Komi Can't Communicate

Go To

  • It makes sense that Rumiko Manbagi was in love with an Adachi-esque character once— the pair, despite being magazine rivals, also had a well-known healthy respect for one another.
  • In the "First Year Festival" arc, it seems like the mangaka messed up the claim that there was only one liar amongst the girls who made onigiri. But ultimately, the claim rings true! Onemine, being the responsible older sister type, has no reason to lie whatsoever, and thus can be 100% trusted to be telling the truth about making the big onigiri. Yamai tried to lie by claiming Komi made the small onigiri, but ended up being honest by sheer accident (Komi didn't make the pretty ones, Najimi did). And between Komi and Najimi, only Najimi actually spoke, and claimed that they had made the bizarrely shaped onigiri and Komi had made the pretty ones. It was only one liar, they just told two lies.
    • That being said, the follow-up page (in the manga) helps clarify who made what and thus that there's only one liar. The bonus illustration shows that Komi did make the perfect ones, and made one perfect square after taking inspiration from Najimi, who made all the other square ones because Najimi is Najimi. Onemine made the big ones because she's a big sister, Yamai made the smaller ones because she's stingy and only cares for herself; she's also the only liar because of course she would demand the rice balls Komi actually made; how successful she is at lying is irrelevant.
  • Tadano's individual trait is that he's average at everything he does. On the downside, he doesn't really excel at anything. But on the upside, Tadano isn't bad at anything he sets his mind to doing. Tadano has shown generally decent skills in whatever activity he sets out to do, be it everyday skills like cooking or even skills not everyone may have, like ice skating or skiing.
  • When Komi visits the cat cafe with Onemine and Otori, she's avoided by every cat but madam/boss-cat Chocolat; when we next see her return (in her second year, Komi having apparently visited many times inbetween) with Tadano and Manbagi, the cats still avoid Komi, although this time it can easily be construed as them doing so because she's the boss-cat's human.
  • Of course Najimi would have above-average grades, despite never studying seriously; they have 5 million friends, all of which are from very different walks of life, and is shown to be able to strike up a conversation with pretty much anyone. Having a cursory knowledge of practically anything and a good memory to recall their friends' names and basic information are basically Required Secondary Powers to them, skills which translate well to academics.
    • They'd also know who's best to copy from; notably they tend toward asking Komi if they can copy her work.
  • Take a closer look at the Sokechu that Rei receives in Chapter 170; it appears to be refusing something and its tail is shaped like the English word "no". The Sokechu is a representation of Rei's refusal to get close to others, and her smashing it on the floor in Chapter 172 is the start of her development beyond this mindset. It's also fitting that Shousuke, another person who doesn't like to communicate, would be the one to repair it for her, and after being repaired, it now symbolises Rei saying no to the idea that having to leave her friends means that she should stop developing meaningful relationships.
  • During Rei's stay with the Komi household, when asked about her favourite type of fish from their aquarium visit; she replies that she liked the Mirror-Fairy Basslets, prompting surprise from Komi's mother; later, when Komi's father hijacks her first date with Tadano, he talks about the same fish and is subsequently happy to find Tadano is listening to and enjoying the information he's offering up. As such, it's quite likely Rei was also someone who would listen to him, when Shoko and Shousuke are increasingly difficult for him to interact with.
