Fridge / Heartbreakers

  • Fridge Logic:
    • Dean may have grabbed the Idiot Ball when he was so ready to believe that his ex-wife, who had previously insisted on waiting until marriage before sleeping with him, was suddenly really into bondage. (Where, exactly, did he think she picked this knowledge up?) Then again, we've seen him make monumentally stupid decisions when sexually frustrated before, so maybe it's just his character.
    • Given that Max has been running cons for pretty much Paige's whole life, you would expect her to have a set of really thoroughly researched and airtight aliases which she uses for her cons. The fact that she decided to pretend to be a Russian without learning more than a handful of words of Russiannote  makes for some hilarious comedy but headscratchingly bad conning from someone who is otherwise very efficient.
    • At the end of the film, Paige purchases the deed to Jack’s bar and gives it back to him. Sweet, but… How? Though he presumably didn’t get $3M for it (as the developers purchased a different lot instead), she still shouldn’t have been able to afford to buy the bar back from the bank - traditionally, divorcing spouses split the assets in a marriage 50/50, meaning Paige should have gotten about half the money from the sale. The only way around this would be if Jack’s proclamation for the lawyers to “give [Paige] whatever she wants” meant she got the entire value of the property in the divorce.

  • Fridge Brilliance:
    • Some of Paige's Narmy lines with Jack - "try wishing on a star". The girl has never had a relationship before. So of course she has no idea how to properly attract someone. Likewise, why she's so fascinated by the stargazing. She's probably used to the scumbags her mother usually seduces and being treated like a sex object. She's never had anyone interested in her as a person before.
    • When Paige says nasty things about Dean, Max says things like "He was kind of cute" - Foreshadowing that she did possibly have feelings for him after all. And Paige says the seduction of Dean took four months, which is a month longer than Max normally needs. Perhaps she was subconsciously prolonging it either to get more time with him or out of guilt.
    • Paige has a lower opinion of Dean than Max. She would have spent more time with him at his office, when he was surrounded by his fellow crooks. Max meanwhile would have been with him alone, usually away from the office, and less likely to see unpleasant behaviour he wouldn't want to display in front of his fiancée.
    • Over the course of the film, each of the three male leads is put in a situation where he believes he's about to have sex, and then for whatever reason she's not into it (e.g., saying no, falling asleep). How each of them reacts to this tells you everything you need to know about their character and how they view their relationship:
      • Tensy fully ignores Max's 'no' and attempts to rape her - Tensy views Max as an object that he has purchased and is entitled to, regardless of her feelings.
      • Dean considers dumping a bucket of ice on the sleeping Max, but dumps it down his own pants instead - Dean has poor impulse control, but he does ultimately love Max and care about her well-being.
      • Jack looks a bit disappointed that Paige fell asleep, but gently kisses her on the forehead and heads outside to stargaze - Jack genuinely loves Paige and is a mature man in full control of himself and his desires.

  • Fridge Horror:
    • How unbelievably and unhealthfully codependent Max and Paige must be for Max to have no compunctions about roofie-ing and sexually assaulting Jack, her daughter's husband, in order to "protect" Paige. It gets better, but still. Dean says it best.
"Do you have any idea how much therapy you people need!"
    • How old is Paige, anyway? And at just what age did Max start using her to pull HoneyTrap cons?
    • Had Tensy not coughed himself to death when he did, he was literally about to rape Max. His exact words when she tried to protest? "I'm much more powerful than you are. Just lie back and enjoy it." Brrr.
    • Poor Jack - the last thing he would remember clearly is turning Max down, and then suddenly, it's the next day and his wife is divorcing him for something he genuinely believed he would never do to her. Had Max not come clean to Paige, he likely would have had to live with that guilt for years, despite having done nothing wrong.
