  • Francis Chester said he wanted Daniel to lose everything he loved. In the pilot, Harrow was more upset at the thought of someone shooting Bettie than shooting him. There's a reason Chester attacked Fern on the Bettie — he was going to cap off killing her with torching the boat, letting Daniel watch as the flames took her, knowing his daughter's body was being consumed inside.
    • He may even have planned to arrange things so that Harrow would be blamed for the fire that "killed" his own daughter.
    • It gets worse. Based on what happened to Tim at the end of "Locus Poenitentiae" ("Place of Penitence"), and the fact that Chester had a syringe in his hand when he went after Fern, despite his usual MO being strangling his female victims, he may have been planning on immobilizing Fern and then setting the boat on fire, probably leaving the phone on board aimed at Fern so Harrow could watch as his daughter burned to death, fully conscious. After all, after losing his daughter, losing his boat would pale in comparison, but this would let Chester inflict maximum suffering on Daniel. Harrow really would be glad to die himself after that.
  • In the very first episode, when Daniel talks to Fern outside the pawn shop, early in the conversation he says, "There's something I have to tell you." It's just slipped in there, easy to miss, especially on first viewing. On second viewing, though, it sure seems like Daniel was trying to tell Fern that he knew she'd been abused, and/or that she didn't have to worry about her step-father anymore. She may not have been ready to listen on the street, but once they were at sea, or on that beach in Bora Bora, Harrow likely would have told her everything!
    • Fern had run away from home, been gone for a year with nothing but text messages. This was the first chance Daniel had had since killing Quinn and disposing of his body to tell Fern she was safe now.
