Word of God is that Mohawk is the literal reincarnation of Stripe, while some of the others are at least implied to be reincarnations of gremlins from the first movie, complete with all or at least most of their memories. Let that sink in: even if humans have no afterlife, Gremlins have the potential to live forever. Now imagine if they used their past experiences to avoid making the same mistakes as their predecessors. Just like how a disease can evolve immunity to vaccines, Gremlins could be nearly impossible to kill, forcing humanity to move to some desert planet like Tatooine or Dune.
