Fridge Brilliance

  • The Super Saiyan God power-up, no matter how you slice it, looks comparatively unassuming. However, compare it to the other transformations, even before regular Super Saiyan became 'a child's plaything': over-the-top, usually with flashy battle aura/effects or big changes to the body (Oozaru or Super Saiyan 3). The regular stuff is Awesome, yet Impractical (by comparison), whereas Super Saiyan God is Boring Yet Practical. And not only that, it's literally a temporary transformation in the first place; no real effort was given to its look by the Saiyans who attempted it in the first place (and also possibly at the meta level too).
    • Furthermore, for all the impressive muscular fighters and strong-looking bulky forms seen in the Dragon Ball franchise, there is a long history within at least the canon of many of the most lethal character forms also being among the sleekest. Frieza's true form is a limber white ghost-like fiend, far less impressive-looking yet also far deadlier than his earlier shell transformations of a bullish devil and a crazy Xenomorph-looking creature. Cell's Perfect form isn't as lanky as his bug-looking initial form, but is far less bulk-heavy than his second form. In both cases, when they bulk up and concentrate all their power into brute strength in said full forms they move slower and/or wear out more easily, and each is defeated by a brand new unlocked level of Super Saiyan. Finally, though Kid Buu, the smallest and purest form of Majin Buu, is weaker overall than Super Buu after he absorbs people, but he is the most dangerous due to his unrestrained nature and making full use of his unusual body. While each level of Super Saiyan can be boosted in its power by increasingly bulkier grades, crossing over from one level to the next defines the muscle that's already there far more than it adds new muscle mass. Lastly, looking at Beerus and Whis: they're as thoroughly unimpressive muscle-wise as the Super Saiyan God is, yet are the most powerful warriors in the Universe. It is actually Toriyama's philosophy that the smaller and less flashy something is, the more powerful it is since being small means that power is compress and concreted instead of wild and big. A good example of this is Super Saiyan 2 compare to the bulky Ultra Super Saiyan.
      • It could be explained more simply than that. Note the form closely-resembles the Kaioken, as many have complained about. Well, that move was taught to Goku by King Kai; it was a god's powerup technique. By that logic, if Goku takes on a fully-godly form, what is he most likely going to look like?
  • So, why is it that food is just so damnably important to Beerus, anyway? Well, the answer lies in his motif and nature. He's visually clearly modeled after Egyptian gods, and himself is actually a god outright. Now, what in mythology has always been a sticking point with vengeful or destructive gods? Offerings. It's not just that Beerus is a serious gourmet, it's that the food he takes are offerings to appease him as a god! When he's displeased with an offering, he punishes those who displeased him. It just so happens that this regularly constitutes annihilating the planet.
  • As mentioned on the funny moments page, if one does the math based on the official timeline of the series they'll realise two things:
    • Both Bulma and Mai are lying about their age!
    • With Bra being born only shortly after Pan, her probable conception date is around about the time of this movie, which, considering Bulma's teasing delight over a Tsundere Vegeta having defending her, is quite possibly not a coincidence.
  • Beerus promised to destroy the Earth, but in the end only blasted a rocky outcrop before deciding that his work is done. When you consider all the collateral damage he caused in his fight with Goku, Beerus did live up to his threat, he just left the Earth in a state it could recover from.
  • As mentioned in the YMMV section: Gohan was taken out like nothing in spite of being the strongest of the Saiyans at the end of the Buu Arc. Now, this may just be the usual Worfing of anyone other than Goku, but once you think about it, it makes sense since the movie goes out of its way to show that Gohan is slightly tipsy and is acting very carelessly. But it is also just as likely that Goku surpass Gohan again since he slacks off on his training.
  • While it's explained as Goku absorbing some of the Super Saiyan God powers from his brief transformation, it still seems odd that that would have been enough of a boost to fight on equal terms with Beerus after he reverted. However, when Goku is beaten by Beerus at the beginning of the movie, King Kai pretty much says that Goku was very badly hurt, to the point of barely breathing. Of course he would be stronger: not only did he absorb some of his God powers, he also had the Zenkai from his near-death recovery after his first fight with Beerus to boost his power further.
  • Speaking of that good 'ol Zenkai, that also helps explain why Vegeta was able to actually hold his own, if even for a bit, against Beerus. Granted, we've established that righteous fury tends to give a Saiyan a sizeable boost, but it still seems a bit much. Then you remember how he got beaten and tattered to the brink of post-mortem death by Kid Buu, and retained those injuries even after being brought to life. Odds are that put him around Goku's level right there and then, if not helped him surpass it after he'd healed up.
  • When Whis first looks into his staff to see where the Saiyans are, he says that most of them are on Earth, and puts the count at five. This makes sense: Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Goten, and Trunks (number six, Vegeta's brother, is off on another planet). But wait - Goku is actually on King Kai's planet at the time, not Earth, so at first it seems that Whis (or at least the scriptwriter) miscounted. With the revelation of Videl's pregnancy, it turns out he counted right after all. There were five Saiyans on Earth when he looked, it's just that Pan hasn't been born yet.
  • Beerus being weaker than Whis is almost foreshadowed immediately just by looking at their names. Just look at their names and what they're named after. Whiskey is stronger than Beerus
  • Shenlong turning the Pilaf gang into kids when they asked for youth might have been a precaution, given what happened when he restored Demon King Piccolo to his prime.

Fridge Logic

  • After Buu pisses of Beerus, Gohan, in his green and black Saiyaman costume, orders Krillin to help evacuate the party, it cuts away from him, and when it cuts back, he is in the type of Gi his father wears. When, and more importantly where, did he change? Not to mention why?
    • Piccolo's Clothes Beam?.
    • Gohan's Great Saiyaman outfit is watch-activated, which was made in the beginning of the Majin Buu Saga. Bulma made it specifically to hide his secret identity, but switched over the helmet in favour of a bandanna cap in the Tenkaichi Budokai tournament. Gohan may have worn his Gi under the Great Saiyanman costume, which it is designed to do.
  • Just how much strength must Kid Buu have now gained in retrospect by his reincarnation into Uub if he can decently fight even base form Goku after the events here?
    • Goku could have been holding back, given that the purpose of fighting Uub was to determine his worthiness as a successor.
      • It also raises the question as to why Goku doesn't go SSGSS anymore.
  • Beerus repeats the widely consistent fact that all pure-blooded Saiyans are supposed to have black hair early in the film when commenting on the Super Saiyan transformation. In a flashback later in the movie, we see Beerus lording over King Vegeta, whose pre-Super: Broly design in Toei's anime filler included light brown hair which is retained in his cameo here. This is a very minor tidbit that's been inconsistent for years, but it's funny that Beerus's statement is so directly contradicted within the movie itself.
