At the beginning, when Lewis and Ed hire the Griner brothers to drive their cars back to Aintry, a third man tags along. We never get a good look at him, but he wears the same cap and has the same build as the Toothless Man. Couple that with the looks and cues the mountain men give each other when they go after Ed and Bobby, and it's likely they'd planned their attack right from the start. Considering how they didn't bat an eye at the thought of rape and murder, this likely wasn't the first time these two had done something like this.
On the first night of the trip, the guys are relaxing around the campfire, getting drunk. Lewis, the one sober member of the party, gets up with a start and goes to look around. It turns out to be a false alarm... or was it? It's highly likely the mountain men were following them and had accidentally made a sound, but didn't want to take on all four of the camping party. If they'd realized most of the party were drunk and couldn't put up much of a fight....
