Sandy playing Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar is symbolic of the role he plays in the film. He and Reuben are best friends and Reuben trusts him, but his advice is absolutely awful, similar to Judas' role as a treacherous advisor to Jesus. Also, Judas is a scene stealer who pulls the audience away from Jesus and gets the show-stopping "Superstar" at the end, much like Philip Seymour Hoffman, who grabs focus in every scene he's in and delivers a climactic speech at the end of the film.
