They want to believe.
"It's a global conspiracy, actually, with key players in the highest levels of power, that reaches down into the lives of every man, woman, and child on this planet."

The X-Files is an American science fiction franchise in the Paranormal Investigation genre (mainly) stemming from Chris Carter's creation of The X-Files.

    Television and film
Television series
  • The X-Files (1993-2002, 2016-2018) - The one that started it all. Initially centering on the investigations of FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Special Agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) before the cast expanded and Duchovny left. Probably Trope Codifier of the paranormal genre in that it balanced sci-fi subjects like aliens and mad science experiments with more traditionally supernatural threats like vampires and werewolves with the occasional mundanger episode.
  • Strange Luck (1995-1996) - Follows the character of Chance Harper (D.B. Sweeney) a news photographer who tends to have preternaturally bad and good luck in the same episode. Not created by Carter, but generally thought to be part of The 'Verse due to Harper's trying and failing to contact Fox Mulder in the episode "Brothers Grim".
  • Millennium (1996) (1996-1999) - The Profiler Frank Black (Lance Henriksen) works with and later against the mysterious title group while trying to defend his wife Catherine (Megan Gallagher) and daughter Jordan (Brittany Tiplady). Gradually revealed to be part of the same universe as The X-Files through shared characters, although the episode "Human Essence" also featured sound footage from someone watching The X-Files.
  • The Lone Gunmen (2001) - A direct spin-off of the original show starring Mulder's geeky tech/conspiracy consultants. With almost no paranormal plot elements it falls more into the comedy-thriller genre.
