Frame-Up in Videogames.

  • Among Us has the Shapeshifter Impostor role, which allows an Impostor to temporarily take on the name, appearance, and pet of a selected crewmate. It can be used for framing an innocent crewmate by taking on their form then killing another crewmate in front of witnesses, allowing the Impostor to score two kills if pulled off well.
  • Back Stab, as it's name implies, begins with your commanding officer in cahoots with an invading army using you as scapegoat and framing you for treason. You then managed to escape and spend the remainder of the game fighting back.
  • Bladed Fury begins with you being framed for murdering your father, and you spend the whole game trying to uncover the truth behind his demise (which includes a journey to hell!) before confronting your father's true killers to prove your innocence.
  • Bleeding Sun: Tsuru was once a respected ninja, but after Ichiro took over Hitoshima, he framed her and the other ninjas as thieves so that the town guards have a justification to purge them.
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War: One way Belikov can obtain Charkov's key to the vault is by framing him as the mole inside the KGB and swiping the key while he's being arrested for treason.
  • Dead Rising 2: The bad guys frame Chuck Greene for triggering the zombie outbreak by showing a video of someone disguised as Chuck releasing the zombies.
  • A common occurrence in Deceit. In fact, it is outright encouraged (the game is called "Deceit" after all...). It usually takes the form of an Infected player getting their hands on a scanner and using it on an Innocent player before declaring them Infected over voice chat, but particularly brazen players have been known to drink blood bags in plain view of an innocent player and scream that said player just drank the blood bags over voice chat while starting to shoot them.
  • Do It For Me: In the "Puppet" ending, the girlfriend who manipulated the rpotagonist into killing the students pretends to be a victim when the police arrive, blaming the whole thing on the protagonist and getting them arrested.
  • In Dragon's Dogma, after slaying the dragon, Duke Edmun frames you up for bargaining with the dragon while he was the one who sacrificed his love on the first place. You will then be branded as a traitor and every guard will kill you on sight, there's no way you can clear your name, and you can't kill the Duke either. But here's a twist: If a traitor is what they want, then why not become one?
  • In the final missions leading up to Final Fantasy XIV's Heavensward expansion, the Warrior of Light and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn are accused of regicide in the death of Ul'dah sultana Nanamo ul Namo by Syndicate member Teledji Adaledji. This was all part of a plan to obtain the Cartenau Flats and the buried remains of Omega Weapon. However, he doesn't even get to celebrate that before Nanamo's Right Hand Man Raubahn decides to make him Half the Man He Used to Be. While most of the Scions disappear and the Warrior and the survivors hide out in Ishgard, the whole event has a couple of Subversions that downplay it: the other city-state leaders don't believe this for a second and allow you to come back to those areas any time you wish and, partway through Heavensward, the truth is revealed about the supposed murder.
  • In Ghost Trick, Lynne is framed for the murder of Yomiel by Yomiel. He controls her to shoot his immortal shell, makes sure it's caught on tape, then leaves his body to be found by the police. Since few people see the corpse before Cabanela steals it, no one else notices that it's a person who supposedly died ten years earlier.
  • Happens to the player twice in GoldenEye (Wii) — first for the death of Valentin Zhukovsky, then later for Russian Defense Minister Mishkin.
  • Hiveswap: Performed by Wanshi, when it's revealed that she stole Lynera's diary and forged new entries into it to try and make it look like she committed the crime.
  • In Hogwarts Legacy, Casanova Wannabe Richard Jackdaw was decapitated by one of the Keepers' golems 50 years prior to the start of the game, with his ghost befriending the Player Character. Players sorted into Hufflepuff House learn that his girlfriend Anne was framed for his murder by another girl he courted, Sirius Black's relative Apollonia, simply out of jealousy and the fact that she was Muggleborn. The player is tasked to Clear Their Name.
  • Hypnospace Outlaw: Shortly after midnight, December 31, 1999, the Mindcrash incident occurs, resulting in the deaths of several Hypnospace users. The crime was pinned on Tim Stevens, known on Hypnospace as "T1MAGGEDON", a teenaged hacker who created the Mindcrash virus and released it shortly before the incident occurred. In truth, however, the Mindcrash virus was relatively harmless: the true cause of the Mindcrash incident was Dylan Merchant, one of the founding programmers of Merchantsoft, pushing out an update without properly testing it beforehand and causing the Brain/Computer Interface used to connect to Hypnospace to malfunction. The timeliness of the Mindcrash virus's release mad Tim the perfect fall guy.
  • King's Heir: Rise to the Throne begins with the death of the King, which is pinned on the Ulmer brothers by means of covering the King with a cloak that had their coat of arms, a pin with their family crest, and a little note saying they did it. By the time Edmund gets back to the family home, there are also wanted posters hung around for their alleged act of Regicide.
  • The Legend Of Tian Ding: The titular character is framed by Ching Feng, a member of the Les Collaborateurs working for General Shimada, who announces the news that Tian-ding betrayed the La RĂ©sistance leading to the entire unit's massacre by Japanese invaders. Tian-ding's former enemy, Matsumoto, would later defect against Shimada after the latter orders him to massacre a village, where Matsumoto helps Tian-ding escape before trying to clear the hero's name.
  • Mass Effect 3: If the player has done sufficiently poorly enough, Kai Leng kills the salarian councillor, and by the time Shepard gets to the other councillors, Udina's manages to cook up doctored footage showing them doing the deed. If they've done really poorly, the Virmire Survivor will believe this without question.
  • The events of Mega Man X4 were the result of the Repliforce, the largest army on Earth at that point, being framed for the Sky Lagoon incident. Things only worsened after Colonel escalated the conflict by refusing to disarm and come in for questioning because he felt the army's honor was being besmirched and they would be treated unfairly. Soon after that, the Repliforce leader General, declared that the organization would seek the foundation of an independent Reploid state, an act that the Maverick Hunters deemed a coup d'etat. The following war saw the utter decimation of the organization. It was later revealed Sigma was pulling all the strings, manipulating events from behind the scenes.
  • Persona 5:
    • After changing the heart of Corrupt Corporate Executive Kunikazu Okumura, father to party member Haru, the team is set to celebrate another successful heist, only for him to suddenly die on live television and the Thieves being immediately blamed for it. Masayoshi Shido's Conspiracy wanted Kunikazu out of the way, so they hacked the Phan-Site and drove the Thieves to go after him via manipulating the votes, then sent in Akechi to murder his Shadow before the Palace fully collapsed.
    • Sequel title Persona 5 Strikers has the Thieves being blamed for the death of Shuzo Ubukata, right after a harrowing Wham Episode, and despite evidence that Ubukata committed suicide months ago. Much like Shido before him, Akira Konoe has the Thieves framed so he can use them as scapegoats for some of his more heinous actions which leads to an arrest warrant. However, this gets torn to pieces by Sae Nijima acting as Zenkichi's laywer, who informs Joker that this was severely botched by the villains because they didn't obtain any legal grounds for said warrant like a judge's seal due to Owada being inept and careless unlike his former boss Shido and rushed the whole procedure, buying them enough time to clear their names.
  • Resident Evil 6:
    • Leon and Helena are framed for the death of President Adam Benford. While technically true (as Leon did kill him out of self defense after he turned into a zombie), his infection was a plot by National Security Advisor Derek Simmons, who is the one pinning the blame on Leon and Helena. In fact, the frame-up conveniently excludes the fact that the President was a zombie.
    • Carla Radames' plot to take over the world involves pinning the whole entire thing on Ada Wong. This is quite effective due to the former being a doppelgänger of the latter, causing the other heroes to mistake Radames for Wong and vice versa, with Chris becoming hell bent on getting revenge to the point he impedes their efforts to stop this mess.
  • Shiver: Poltergeist: James the butler, so incensed by Richard Kangale's intent to marry Brenda, a servant-girl, fakes a letter from Richard summoning her to the lighthouse, where she is burned alive. Richard himself dies in a lightning strike trying to summon her spirit, meaning that Brenda, now the poltergeist, never gets the chance to find out he's innocent until Ricardo shows up.
  • SLAMMED!: JJ frames you for illegal drug use, resulting in your firing and subsequent Heroic BSoD.
  • Star Wars Legends: Knights of the Old Republic: Subverted. Sunry is accused of murdering a Sith woman, and he says that the case is a complete Frame Up. Evidence reveals that he did do it, and when you confront him with this, he will explain himself. It's up to you if you want to get him free or send him to his death. One interesting element is that the Sith did frame him, but only after the Republic covered up the crime.
  • Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People:
    • In "Homestar Ruiner", Strong Bad accidentally makes it look like Homestar burned down Marzipan's decorations for her victory party. Also, the only way for Strong Bad to beat Pom Pom in the Race to the End of the Race is to get Pom Pom disqualified by planting Total Load Total Body Energy Enhancement Powder in his locker.
    • In "Baddest of the Bands", Strong Bad tries to get the Two-O-Duo (Bubs and Coach Z) to reunite so they can compete in the Battle Royale of the Bands. Bubs thinks Coach Z has "gone soft", so Strong Bad has to pull three pranks (TP-ing the Stick, throwing rocks through Marzipan's window, and stealing stuff from Bubs' own dang store) and pin them on Coach Z to make Bubs think he's cool again. Later, Strong Bad frames Limozeen, who are serving as judges for the Battle Royale, for various misdeeds Marzipan is feeling preachy about (polluting the wetlands, animal abuse, and objectifying women in the media). This will get her mad enough to sabotage her band's chances with a catchy anti-Limozeen song.
  • The premise of Super Mario Sunshine. Mario's vacation is ruined when he is framed for polluting Isle Delfino with paint and graffiti by a shadowy impostor that looks like him, who is later revealed to be Bowser's son in disguise, and is quickly found guilty in a Kangaroo Court. While tasked with cleaning up the island as per the court order, Mario sets out to find and capture the impostor.
  • In Temtem, upon arriving at the Underground City of Quetzal the player is immediately arrested, as someone's been committing crimes all over the city disguised as them. After the Prison Episode and name-clearing, you learn that the culprit is none other than The Rival Max, who's been The Mole for the Belsoto Clan all along.
  • Evil roles in Town of Salem will often attempt to frame innocents in an attempt of deflecting attention. The Framer role does this by name, making a target seem suspicious to a Sheriff and changing Investigator results to help the Mafia. The Hex Master and the Arsonist both have similar abilities as well.
  • Yakuza 4; Years prior to the game, Taiga Saejima stormed a noodle shop where a rival family was meeting and killed 18 men, earning him the nickname "18 Counts Saejima" an a 25 year stint on death row. Except he didn't; unbeknownst to Saejima, his guns were loaded with rubber bullets and the real murderer, Isao Katsuragi, followed along to finish the job and fuel his own rise through the Tojo Clan. On top of this, the brother Saejima thought betrayed him, Goro Majima, was waylaid and beaten half to death by Katsuragi's men before being turned over to Shimano for a year of torture, to further isolate Saejima and eliminate suspicion.
  • Yandere Simulator:
    • One way to get rid of rivals is to frame them for murder by wearing gloves (to keep Yandere-chan's fingerprints off) while wielding a weapon that the rival previously used (such as a knife from the Cooking Club). As long as Yandere-chan doesn't get her fingerprints on the weapon and burns any other possible evidence that could tie the murder to her, the rival will become the primary suspect.
    • A non-murder elimination method is to frame the rival for being a delinquent and get them expelled. Ways to do this is planting contraband, stolen goods, or answer sheets in their desk, or steal their phone and take panty shots with them to make them look like a pervert. Present enough 'evidence' to the guidance counselor, and the rival will be expelled.
    • Other characters the player can cause to be expelled are the delinquents. After purchasing the guidance counciler's secret about blaming herself for the delinquents' current state from Info-Chan, Ayano can blame them every time she's caught misbehaving (although same excuse doesn't work more than once). Doing this enough times will get them expelled. Another way of getting rid of them is by making them defenceless. If Ayano gets covered with red paint that mimics blood and lies to the council that the delinquents hurt her with their weapons, they will be forbidden from carrying weapons on subsequent days.
