Times where someone is Forced Out of the Closet in Literature.

  • In The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, Sammy Clay is publicly outed as a result of his questioning by the Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency.
  • This occurs to Liza in Annie on My Mind. After a teacher catches her and her girlfriend having sex, they out her. Annie is spared because she goes to a different school and Liza refuses to state her name. Liza ends up forcibly outed to her family and her school, while Annie decides to come out to her family at a later date. Two teachers at Liza's school also end up outed as a couple as a result and end up fired.
  • Leo from The Art of Being Normal comes out as trans to his crush Alicia, but she rejects him. Alicia's friends find out his secret and out him to the entire school.
  • Discussed Truth in Television example in The Atrocity Archive. Back in the day in the UK, it was illegal to be gay, which meant gays working in the British intelligence community (including the Laundry) were vulnerable to blackmail (i.e. "work for me or I'll blow the whistle on you"). Nowadays, the Laundry just requires you to be openly gay, the idea being that you can't be blackmailed if you aren't hiding anything. Hence Bob's Camp Gay flatmate Pinky drags his Straight Gay partner Brains out to Gay Pride once a year to maintain their security clearances.
  • In Beautiful Music for Ugly Children, trans boy Gabe works as a DJ and presents himself as a cis guy over the air, but in person he's mostly known as a girl named Liz. He flirts with a caller named Mara who talks him into meeting her in person for a date. It doesn't take long for her to recognize him as the "girl" who always bought a Pepsi when Mara worked at the snack bar in school. Mara outs Gabe to his fan club, the Ugly Children Brigade. By that point Gabe is out of school and doesn't have to deal with transphobic classmates, but half the members of the UCB leave and two people start posting death threats on the group's Facebook page. Mara eventually feels guilty and tries to apologize, but Gabe thanks her for forcing him to live openly as himself instead of living a double life.
  • In Boy Meets Boy, Tony is outed when his parents find a copy of The Advocate in his bedroom.
  • The Change Room: Shar made a speech at a gay rights rally when she hadn't come out to her dad as queer. It got put on the Internet, and a relative told him disapprovingly.
  • Chocoholic Mysteries: In Mouse Trap, when Julie Singletree is murdered and Lee's trying to figure out the killer's motive, one of the suspects she comes up with (who turns out to be innocent) is a gay man who, along with his partner, had been keeping it secret from the partner's elderly father (who was ninety and living in a nursing home, and thought they were just friends); Julie had earlier encouraged them to be open about their relationship to him, and finally casually outed the pair to the man, to the pair's fury.
  • Girls Don't Hit: Joss publicly outs two female detectives who are secretly married, as part of a distraction when she's poisoning a target.
  • The Heroes of Olympus has an encounter with the Cupid, the god of love, end this way — Cupid refuses to help them until Nico di Angelo is true to himself, essentially forcing the character to admit their homosexuality.
  • Subverted in the Island in the Sea of Time (Series), where Marian Alston chooses to come out as a lesbian in order to get out in front of the rumors about her and Swindapa's relationship. Ironically, she isn't actually dating Swindapa at that time, but the two hook up shortly afterward.
  • Just Juliet:
    • Scott was outed due to his parents catching him with his boyfriend, with his dad kicking him out afterward. They haven't spoken for years.
    • In a milder example, Lacey outs Lena to other friends of theirs without asking after she told her, to Lena's brief annoyance. However, since all her friends accept her, she doesn't really mind.
  • The Love and Lies of Rukhsana Ali: Rukhsana gets outed when her mom catches her with her girlfriend Ariana while they're kissing in her room.
  • Love Over Gold: When Katrien was fourteen, her first girlfriend's father walked in on the two of them kissing. He accused Katrien of seducing and corrupting his daughter and complained about her to the school, which is how her homophobic classmates found out she was gay.
  • Oddly Enough: In "Am I Blue?", main character Vincent ends up wishing for "gay fantasy #3", where every gay person — those who are out, those who aren't and those who are undecided — across the country turns blue for a day. At the end of the story, Vincent apologizes to any gay readers whom he may have caused trouble for by outing them in such a manner.
  • Olga Dies Dreaming: After Prieto is elected councilman, the Selby brothers coerce him to vote in their interests by threatening to out him. Prieto represents a district that is primarily Latinx and his constituents are not likely to be accepting of him being out, as the Selby brothers point out.
  • The book The Other Boy by M.G. Hennessey is about a 12-year-old transgender boy who is outed as trans by a classmate.
  • Set in the world's first gay state, Proud Pink Sky sees William and Gareth outed by their parents, and their subsequent attempt to flee to the Gay Republic.
  • Part of the Trauma Conga Line faced by the titular character in Reconstructing Amelia was this happening to her when she's filmed lying naked on the floor with another girl. Worse, the one who outs her, Zadie Smith clearly realizes how bad this is and takes pains to not out Dylan who was the other girl with Amelia at the time by making sure Dylan's face isn't visible.
  • In Red, White & Royal Blue Henry and Alex get outed when someone leaks their private emails and a photo of them kissing to The Daily Mail.
  • In "Sid Stills' Blues (Three-Quarters in the Bag in Alphabet City)", Nathan's ex-boyfriend outed him to his bandmate Jason, leading to the breakup of the band.
  • Happens in Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda. Halfway through the novel, Simon himself is outed after Martin accuses him of taking too long to set up Martin and Abby (even though Abby has no interest in Martin by this point and never did).
  • Sorry, Bro: Nareh is caught kissing Erebuni by Sona and her mother, the former of whom promptly spreads the news as a notorious gossip. She tries to play it off as not what it looks like at first, but no one really believes it. Erebuni is quite upset by her doing so, and it's part of why their relationship temporarily dissolves.
  • Spellster: Early in In Pain and Blood Ceri, a female trainee, is outed as being bisexual, which results in her killing herself. Being outed however in a straight relationship is as bad, as the administration forbids relationships among the trainees generally.
  • Stone Butch Blues: Jess's old unionist friend accidentally outs her as a woman in the factory by using the wrong pronouns. She quits her job there before they can fire her (or report her actions to the police).
  • In the backstory for Super Powereds, Titan was a well-respected Hero, who always stated how much his family meant to him. Then an Intrepid Reporter caught him having sex with another male Hero in a hotel room. The revelation sent shocks through the largely conservative public, and the resulting scandal forced Titan to leave the Hero life behind and run away, abandoning his family. His sons have never forgiven him. After he returns to active Heroing in Corpies, he finds out that other people also resent him for leaving, as standing up for himself and owning who he was would have gone a long way towards paving the way for the public acceptance of LGBTQ Heroes. Many LGBTQ Supers, who had dreams of becoming Heroes, abandoned them after Titan's scandal. By the time the book takes place, there are openly gay Heroes, as society has gotten a little more accepting of them.
  • Symptoms Of Being Human is about a bigender teenager whose blog goes viral. Someone at their school connects the blog to Riley and threatens to out them.
