The house finds you.

Narrator: People always stay in the house, some don't leave. The right ones usually find the place. Or maybe it's the other around. The place finds them.

You Should Have Left is a psychological horror film written on the screen and directed by David Koepp and produced by Jason Blum, based on the 2017 book of the same name by Daniel Kehlmann.

A retired banker, Theo (Kevin Bacon), his actress wife, Susanna (Amanda Seyfried), and their young daughter go on a getaway to Wales. The isolated house has something off about it - and not just because none of them remember booking the vacation in the first place.

As the days go on, Theo begins to realize something malicious is lurking within the house's shadows, targeting him specifically. As he tries to keep his family safe, his own past will come back to threaten all he currently has.

You Should Have Left was released in 2020, to mixed reviews.

This film contains examples of the following:

  • Bigger on the Inside: Theo and his daughter Ella noticed the angle between the wall and floor of the kitchen seem off, so they measure it and find that the kitchen is larger inside than outside.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Theo's first wife killed herself via drowning in the bathtub. People suspected he'd killed her, but he was acquitted. He later admits he could have saved her, but (after how badly his marriage had deteriorated) he stood back and watched it happen.
  • Wham Line: "I killed her, Susan."
