Tropes for the film:

  • Accidental Truth: Journalist David Raybourne decides to write a thriller novel about a terrorist plot to kidnap the Italian prime minister, Aldo Moro. Unfortunately, there really is such a plot in motion, and a draft of the novel falls into the hands of the terrorists who take measures to silence what they assume is a security leak.
  • Blofeld Ploy: David and Alison are taken out to be shot by the Red Brigades. Instead, the terrorists shoot Raybourne's girlfriend in the Brigade whom they mistakenly think breached security and told Raybourne about the plot to kidnap Moro. They tell the two journalists to photograph the body and print the story, so everyone will know what the Red Brigade do to traitors.
  • Faked Kidnapping: A left-wing sympathizer who's the son of a wealthy businessman allows himself to be kidnapped by the Red Brigades. Unfortunately, after they stuff him in the trunk, he's killed by a carbon monoxide leak, so the Red Brigade pretend they executed him.
  • Gangland Drive-By: In her Establishing Character Moment, Alison King has been tipped off about a Red Brigade assassination involving two masked men on a motorcycle doing a drive-by shooting with an Uzi. At one stage they're firing at her as well as she takes pictures.
  • Hand Signals: After receiving a phone call that Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro's convoy is on the way, a terrorist runs a hand through his hair to signal the female terrorist in charge of the kidnap team.
  • Historical Domain Character: Aldo Moro, Italian Prime Minister who was kidnapped and later killed in 1978.
  • No Such Thing as Bad Publicity: In-Universe as they are terrorists. Rather than kill the two journalists, they shoot someone and tell them to take pictures.
  • Punk in the Trunk: This backfires when a kidnap victim (apparently a willing participant due to his left-wing views) is put in the trunk only to die of carbon monoxide poisoning from an exhaust leak. The Red Brigades then pretend he'd been executed as an act of terrorism.
  • Wall Bang Her: Raybourne with Alison up against a door, followed by Alison getting eaten out on the couch, and then taken doggie style on the bed. It's Sharon Stone in her prime; what do you expect?
