Tropes for the film:

  • First Girl Wins:
    • Maggie and Chris have known each other for years and ended up with each other.
    • Gender-inverted for Ashely as the first boy she talked to in the beginning was the skateboard guy.
  • Girl Next Door: Maggie. She eventually ends up with her boy next door, Chris.
  • Irony: The popular girl Ashley ends up with the skateboard guy from the beginning.
  • Literally Loving Thy Neighbor: Ryan is Ashley's neighbor, who, after chasing the wrong girl, finally realities he had more in common with his friend, and the girl next door. Various scenes are heavily based on their balconies facing each other.
  • Playing Cyrano: Ryan and Chris are Cyranos for each other. The nerdy accordion player (West) helps the school jock (Franco) woo his nerdy (but hot) best friend, by making him seem intelligent and sensitive. As a quid pro quo, Chris helps Ryan get the popular girl by showing him how to be a total jerk to her. In the end, the nerdy main characters end up with each other.
  • Repetitive Name: Ryan is mostly known by his friends as "Brian Ryan" after they misheard his first name as "Brian" and assumed someone calling him "Ryan" was using his last name.
