Waterways is a short film based on an anthropomorphic novel of the same name by Kyell Gold. Kory, a catholic teen and his protective widowed mother invite Kory's friend Samaki over for dinner before mass. What Kory hasn't told his mother is that Samaki is more than a friend, and reconciling that with his religious beliefs is tearing him apart. Samaki and Kory's mother mean well and want him to be happy, but it's up to Kory to decide for himself how he'll go forward.

The film was directed by Mikel Scott Dever as part of the Berkeley Film & Media program. Filming wrapped in the spring of 2017 and the film is currently in post production.

The source material Waterways was released in 2008, winning the 2008 Ursa Major Award for Best Novel.

  • Coming-Out Story: Celia's discovery of her son's relationship matters, but his internal conflict is more central.
  • Crash-Into Hello: Kory backs into Samaki at the pool.
  • Straight Gay: The gay characters aren't flmboyant and both are athletes.
