The X from Outer Space (宇宙大怪獣ギララ, Uchū Daikaijū Girara, or 'Giant Space Monster Guilala') is a Japanese Kaiju movie from 1967 made by Shochiku.
A spaceship's encounters with a UFO leads to a spore being taken back to earth, where it develops into the titular giant monster.
In 2008 a comedic sequel was released called Monster X Strikes Back: Attack the G8 Summit.
This film provides examples of:
- Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Guilala's an alien... and that's the best description of him that isn't "Giant alien space chicken".
- Ball of Light Transformation: In the sequel, Guilala transforms itself into a kaiju-sized fireball to fly to Hokkaido. It uses this ability only as transportation however, and doesn't use it for fighting Take-Majin.
- Behemoth Battle: In the sequel, a monstrous warrior-statue called Take-Majin fights Guilala.
- Beware the Silly Ones: True, Guilala may look pretty derpy and silly-looking compared to it's fellow 1960s kaiju brethren Godzilla or Rodan, but it's still a very powerful kaiju who causes plenty of damage during both movies' runtime. In the first film it even tanks a fighter jet to the forehead and keeps going!
- Denser and Wackier: The sequel ups the silliness compared to the original film. Case in point; one scene had Take-Majin catching a missile using his buttcheeks.
- Every Car Is a Pinto: Two of the guys lure Guilala with a radioactive capsule being towed by a jeep, which (after dropping off the radioactive stuff) explodes when it bumps into an obstruction.
- From a Single Cell: Guilala begins as a spore before it starts growing kaiju-sized. It reverts to spore form upon defeat.
- Hell Is That Noise: Fitting for a violent kaiju like Guilala, his roars sound absolutely furious. Listen for yourself.
- Let X Be the Unknown: The english title is this. Probably called that because the monster's actual name, Guilala, is silly as hell.
- Lighter and Softer: The second movie is far sillier and nowhere as serious as the first.
- Lightning Bruiser: Guilala is surprisingly fast for a Kaiju of his size, being able to consistently keep up with a Jeep carrying guilalalium.
- Living Statue: Take-Majin, the sentient golden effigy in the sequel who comes to life to battle Guilala.
- Multi-Armed and Dangerous: Take-Majin has multiple arms, which it uses in combat efficiently.
- Nuclear Mutant: Guilala's powers comes from absorbing radiation from nuclear plants; in the sequel it deliberately targets the Noboribetsu Power Planet for more energy.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: In the first movie, Guilala has bright, pinkish red eyes. And even by kaiju standards, it's incredibly violent, attacking human civilization for seemingly no reason.
- Unobtainium: Guilalalium.
