Tropes for the film:

  • Attending Your Own Funeral: David arranges a "living funeral" for his father, who is dying of cancer. He gets through one line of his eulogy before the power cuts out.
  • Bittersweet Ending: David makes peace with his father before he passes away. His marriage to Noreen is over, but his relationship with his children is much improved. He accepts his new job in New York, where his new-found confidence gets him a lot more respect and people no longer throw food at him (a possible side-effect of the bow he carries for his new archery hobby). The film ends with David and the Hello America cast riding a Thanksgiving parade between the New York Fire Department and Spongebob Squarepants - a position which he treats like a metaphor for his lot in life.
  • Guns in Church: David takes up archery as hobby. At the end of the movie, he is seen carrying a bow over his shoulder as he walks down the city streets. In closing narration, he acknowledges that it might be why people don't throw things at him from their cars anymore.
  • Running Gag: People are throwing fast food at David throughout the movie because they're so resentful of how easy his job is. It gets a lot less funny at one point when someone throws a McDonald's apple pie at him, since he picks it up and runs after the people, throwing it back at them while screaming that he has kids and now he has to see them with pie on his clothes.
  • Weather Report: Davis is a weatherman who is so resented by people that they throw food and drinks at him. When he takes up archery and starts carrying a bow with him, people stop throwing stuff at him.
