Tropes for the film:

  • Ambiguously Bi: Both Jack and Adrian.
    • It's implied that Adrian engaged in group sex with the girl and guy in the van, while Jack's reaction seemed almost like that of a jealous lover.
    • Jack is married with a family, he also murders people of both sexes. Generally, heterosexual serial killers have female victims while homosexual killers have male victims, so either Jack is bisexual, or he just gets off on killing and has no sexual interest towards anyone.
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: For the first half of the movie, we're led to believe that the aggressive and impulsive Adrian is a dangerous murderer while Jack, while a thief, is mild-mannered and physically harmless. We later discover that Jack is the much more dangerous and depraved of the two.
  • Death Seeker: This trait is used as a reveal in the final act. The main characters are a serial killer and a white-collar embezzler who know each other's secret. It seems like the meek wage-slave is the embezzler and the brash vagabond is the killer. However, it turns out that the vagabond is the embezzler, and he's been tormenting the serial killer wage-slave because he wants to be killed by him.
  • The Ending Changes Everything: Jack is an uptight office drone and Adrian is a charming drifter. It's established that one of them is a white collar criminal with a stash of cash and one of them is a serial killer. Adrian insists on accompanying Jack, using the fact that he "knows what's in his briefcase" as leverage. Every time Adrian sets his sights on a passerby, against Jack's pleas, that person winds up dead. In the end, it's revealed that Jack is actually the serial killer (with a briefcase full of knives) and Adrian the white collar criminal. Adrian has a death wish and is toying with a killer the whole time, driving him to indulge his murderous impulses against his will.
  • Foreshadowing: There are hints well before the reveal that Jack is a murderer while Adrian robbed the casino, most notably in the scene at the hippy van when Adrian tells Jackj that he has no more right to moralize than Jack the Ripper (it wouldn't make much sense to compare a thief to Jack the Ripper).
  • For the Evulz: Jack is a meek serial killer and Adrian is a brash vagabond. Just before he's murdered, the vagabond finally asks the killer why he chops his victims into little pieces. The killer sneeringly replies, "For the fuck of it".
  • I Want You to Meet an Old Friend of Mine: Brion James and Henriksen previously worked together on The Horror Show.
  • Tagline: "All men are created evil".
