The Short provides examples of:
- Batman in My Basement: Done with a baby dinosaur.
- Bolivian Army Ending: The main characters make it back to their truck, only to discover that a Suchomimus has already found it, has eaten their companion's dog, and is preparing to attack them.
- Genre Throwback: The Hatchling wears the influence of 1980's kid's adventure films a la E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Amblin's productions on its sleeve.
- Goofy Feathered Dinosaur: Played straight with "Ralph", the baby Deinocheirus. Averted with the adult Deinocheirus, which are presented in a regal light.
- Herbivores Are Friendly: Zigzagged with the adult Deinocheirus. They prepare to attack Avery and her friends when they think they want to threaten them, but are content with letting them go once she releases the baby Deinocheirus and they realize they don't want to harm them.
- Impersonating an Officer: Poachers disguise themselves as DFW agents to get Ralph the Deinocheirus. However, they're found out when one of them puts their badge on upside down.
- In Medias Res: The story presented is at the climaxx of itself, as if it were a excerpt of a much larger work.
- Introduced Species Calamity: Brought up by Avery's mom, as the arrival of the dinosaurs are a potential threat to the ecosystem. Likely the reason that actual DFW agents are tasked in capturing dinosaurs.
- Joisey: The short's setting of Amber Ridge is in New Jersey, thouugh the state's identity never plays into the story.
- Retraux: The film's poster is done like a hand-drawn film poster from the 1980's and 80's.
- Riddle for the Ages: How the dinosaurs got into the setting is never revealed, though it's implied they were introduced by an external force.
- Savage Spinosaurs: Things don't look good for the main characters when they run into a Suchomimus at the end.
- Screams Like a Little Girl: Avery's two male friends are sent into a panic when one of the adult Deinocheirus approaches them menancingly and the lock of the cage where the baby is inside gets stuck and doesn't opens, prompting them to give a very unmanly, high pitched scream.
- Shout-Out: A few to Jurassic Park are in the film according to one animator conversing◊ on Twitter.
- 20 Minutes into the Past: A promotional poster reveals the short takes place in 2022, a year before its release.
- What the Hell, Hero?: The kids reaction when Tammy says she'd plan to sell Deinocheirus hatchlings to a guy in Florida, especially after the trouble they went to bring one to her sanctuary. She replies that she needs the money to provide both for herself and the animals.
