The Special Friends series is a trilogy of Direct to Video films made by Melissa & Doug (then known as Lights, Camera, Interaction!) in the late '80s and early '90s.
The main protagonist of the videos is Brett (played by Brett Ambler) who interacts with the viewers at home and his "Special Friends".
It has gained infamy online for every single character's Fountain of Memes personalities.
The three films' tropes include:
- I Just Want to Have Friends: Brett at first. With help from his "special friend" he makes friends with the other characters.
- Kazoos Mean Silliness: The entry "YOU on KAZOO" has Brett trying to get his friends to play kazoo with him.
- Large Ham: Brett often puts far too much emphasis on words in an attempt to come across as excited.They want ME to kazoo with THEM?! WOW!
- Once per Episode: Brett would sing the "Special Friends" song near the end of each installment.
- No Fourth Wall: Brett declares the viewer his friend, and the other kids introduce themselves to them.
- No Indoor Voice: JOHNATHAAAANNNNN!
- Shrinking Violet: At the start of You On Kazoo Brett is too shy to go and play with the other kids, but he quickly overcomes this and they all play together.
- Title Drop: "I think we're gonna be friends...special friends".
- Vocal Dissonance: Some of the girls sound like adult women due to having their lines re-dubbed.
