A 1990 science fiction thriller directed by Richard C Sarafian (credited as Alan Smithee) that a huge solar flare threatening to fry the Earth and the race to launch a nuke at the sun.

The movie stars Tim Matheson, Charlton Heston, Peter Boyle, Annabel Schofield, Corin Nemec, Jack Palance, Tetsuya Bessho, and Dorian Harweood.

It was released on July 14, 1990 in Japan and November 25, 1992 in the US.


Tropes for the film:

  • Antimatter: The plot concerns the flinging of an anti-matter bomb to cause a pre-emptive solar flare.
  • Automated Automobiles: The automated 18-wheelers. They put a motorcycle on the road to try to stop one and the truck just runs right over it, but when one of them stands out in the path of the next one that comes along, this truck does stop. The truck has a fail-safe to prevent it from running over people.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Arnold Teague (Peter Boyle), whose megacorporation will profit from the rush buying in the ensuing panic, so he tries to sabotage the mission. No, seriously.
  • Deus ex Nukina: A giant solar flare that would roast Earth is predicted. The nuke is supposed to trigger it prematurely when it's safely on the other side of the Sun.
  • The End of the World as We Know It: The earth is directly threatened by a massive solar flare that the heroes must trigger prematurely.
  • Solar Flare Disaster: The plot revolves around an international space mission to go to the Sun and detonate a nuclear weapon which will make a gigantic solar flare that is predicted to cook Earth to go off early, sparing the planet.
  • Tagline: "In the year 2050, the battle to save the earth will be fought on the sun".
