Shark Week (a.k.a. Shark Assault) is a 2012 low budget horror movie from The Asylum, starring Patrick Bergin and Yancy Butler.

A group of eight seemingly unconnected people are abducted and brought to the secret island compound of wealthy drug dealer and sadist Tiburon. They are forced into a horrifying gauntlet where they must survive a barrage of ever deadlier species of shark: 7 days, 7 sharks, 1 survivor.

Tropes:

  • Avenging the Villain: The Big Bad Tiburon undertakes his elaborate scheme of revenge in order to avenge the death of his son, who was a drug dealer, in a botched arrest attempt.
  • Death Course: Tiburon makes his captives run through a death course which essentially consists of a series of Shark Pools with traps between them.
  • Death Seeker: Layla believes that she deserves to die and offers to be a distraction for one of the sharks so the others can escape. She later performs a Heroic Sacrifice to destroy the tiger shark.
  • Designated Girl Fight: When Final Girl Reagan escapes the last shark and makes it to the shore, The Dragon Elena goes to the beach to deal with her personally without telling her boss. And she does not take a weapon with her so the two women have to fight hand-to-hand.
  • The Dragon: Tiburon's girlfriend Elena also serves as his dragon: dealing with the hands-on stuff regarding the captives and going out to confront Final Girl Reagan one-on-one when she escapes the Death Course.
  • Dwindling Party: Tiburon transports eight captives to his island compound. One or more die at each Shark Pool in the Death Course, until only Reagan is left as the Final Girl.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: The Big Bad Tiburon undertakes his elaborate scheme of revenge in order to avenge his son's death.
  • Final Girl: Tiburon transports eight captives to his island compound. One or more die at each Shark Pool in the Death Course, until only Reagan is left as the Final Girl to take on The Dragon Elena and the Big Bad Tiburon.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Layla detonates a landmine, blowing up herself and the tiger shark, to allow the rest of the group to progress.
  • Instant Sedation: Tiburon's henchman inject the people they abduct with some drug that knocks them out instantly.
  • Intrepid Reporter: Reagan is an investigative journalist whose exposé on Tiburon's son led to his bungled arrest and death. This is an Informed Ability, however, as we only see her as a captive on the island.
  • Javelin Thrower: Final Girl Reagan kills the Big Bad Tiburon by hurling a harpoon into him.
  • Land Mine Goes "Click!": One of the obstacles the captives have to negotiate in Tiburon's Death Course is a minefield on the beach. Holt somehow manages to step on the only totally exposed mine, but Cal yanks him off it so it explodes behind him. Later, during her fight with Reagan, Elena steps on one and has just enough time to look down after hearing it go 'click' before she blows up.
  • The Load: Of all of the captives, Layla contributes nothing to the group's survival before her Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Sadist: Elena. Her sadistic personality is established when she is shown displaying pleasure over Tiburon killing his first victim, as well as her wanting to watch Tiburon's live feed of his victims being tortured and subjected to his twisted demands.
  • Shark Pool: Tiburon makes his captives progress through a series of shark pools, each containing a different type of shark.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: Elena points out to Tiburon that now he has abducted his victims, he could just put a bullet in each of their heads and be done with it. However, Tiburon feels that vengeance is like a bottle of fine wine; it should be lingered over and savoured.
  • Teaser-Only Character: Tiburon disposes some of some nameless mook in his Shark Pool in the teaser.
  • Threatening Shark: Tiburon makes his captives run a Death Course where the pass through a series of Shark Pools, each of which contains a different sort of threatening shark: hammerhead, thresher, tiger, bull, great white, etc.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: One of the eight captives, Roger, is killed within minutes of arriving on the island. The audience never even learns what his role in the death of Tiburon's son was.
