Stacy is a troubled teenage girl who has terrifying hallucinations. After being in a psych ward, she's getting medication and seeing a therapist, though she continues seeing things, concealing it from others as she fears getting committed once again. Despite this, Stacy has loving support from her family and two friends. She is also in a relationship with Matt, though hiding the extent still from her mom and dad. When she downloads a digital game, Shall We Play? in hopes it can help her deal with the demons of her past, however, things begin taking a very sinister turn.

Tropes:

  • Affectionate Nickname: Stacy usually nicknames her good friend Emma as Ems. Emma calls her Stace too in turn.
  • Best Friend: Emma is Stacy's, with her being unwaveringly supportive of her and concerned about whatever problems she has. Jess on the other hand seems like this too at first, but soon shows it's all a facade in her case.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Matt and Jess seem to be nice initially. Then both prove themselves cruel and uncaring people to Stacy, making her the victim of humiliating photos.
  • But Liquor Is Quicker: Matt gets Stacy drunk, then tries to have sex with her when she's half out of it. He at first stops when Stacy says no. Then however he takes photos of her when she passes out and invites buddies of his over to look when he has left her in her underwear. All three write out Slut on her belly, taking photos of it.
  • The Cassandra: Stacy legitimately can see malicious spirits and detects danger as a result. However, this has been mistaken for psychosis so no one believes her about them.
  • Dead All Along: It turns out Stacy's Grandma Betty is dead, and has been for a year. She's still able to see her though, proving Stacy is capable of seeing spirits.
  • Demonic Possession: Stacy is possessed by a malicious spirit after seeking to banish them, which makes her cut herself after she's foamed at the mouth.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: While they had definitely wronged her and undoubtedly were deserving of some comeuppance, Stacy gets revenge on Matt along with his friends by murdering them all.
  • Downer Ending: Stacy gives in to the lures of her malicious great aunts' spirits, embracing the revenge they offer her then dying and becoming a malicious spirit along with them. Not only that, but at the end her younger sister Paula is lured into playing another game just like Stacy did that ended in this, as are other people she knew. Stacy is shown with her great aunts now arriving and tempting them like she was.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: The worst part of Stacy's humiliation is how Jess, her friend, starts believing that she took the photos voluntarily, shaming her and calling her crazy after this when Stacy rightly (truthfully) says it wasn't her. It turns out this is because Jess wants Matt, who took the photos, herself.
  • Gaslighting: Matt and his friends act like Stacy is crazy for getting upset with him for taking the humiliating photos of her when she'd been unconscious, while he denies doing anything.
  • Hallucinations: Stacy is having frightening visions, especially of two blonde girls (twins) from the past, which freaks her out as she fears it means she's going crazy. Many however turn out to be real. Stacy being seen talking with what appears to be herself (really the spirit of her dead grandmother) naturally only makes her look more deluded to other people, including her psychiatrist.
  • Instant Humiliation Just Add Youtube: Matt takes photos of Stacy in her underwear with his friends when she passes out drunk, then sends them from her phone to him acting like she'd done it, humiliating her when it's shared around. All because she wouldn't have sex with him like he wanted while drunk.
  • I See Dead People: Stacy is able to see spirits it turns out, as it's revealed Grandma Betty (whom she talks with regularly) has been dead for over a year and the two girls she has seen are also real.
  • Love Triangle: Stacy was into Matt, until he mistreated her terribly. However, then it turns out Jess also likes him, and dates Matt after this, which is why she took his side against Stacy.
  • Medicate the Medium: No one believes Stacy is actually seeing spirits. It results in her receiving medication for this, while having been held in a psychiatric ward. However, her being possessed by spirits that make her act in erratic, violent ways also led to this (but of course that just gets seen as another symptom).
  • Mistaken for Insane: Stacy's ability to see spirits was misidentified as psychosis, resulting in her being medicated for this as supposed hallucinations.
  • Ms. Fanservice:
    • Stacy is a pretty girl who's seen in her underwear at length (with panties tight enough to outline her vulva), which also admittedly is crossed with Fan Disservice as it's after Matt undresses her when she had passed out to take humiliating photos of her. Later, when she's possessed the spirit inside her acts very seductively to the cops by opening her shirt, showing her bra, with the same mix of Fan Disservice as a result too.
    • Stacy's friend Jess is also pretty and always wears shorts which show off her long shapely legs, with a top that is fairly tight around her large bust too.
  • Ouija Board: Shall We Play? basically is a game app, though it becomes very sinister quickly. It turns out Grandma Betty played a game for communicating with the dead inside of a strange wooden box found in the woods that was linked to her sisters' mysteriously drowning once they'd played.
  • Revenge: In a moment of anger, Stacy wishes for her dead great aunts' to help her get revenge against Matt (her ex-boyfriend) and Jess (her ex-friend) for wronging her. They then kill Matt along with his two friends who helped in his humiliation of her.
  • Secret Relationship: Unbeknownst to her mom, Stacy's already dating Matt. She's covering this up since it's moving faster than her mom likely would want.
  • Shower of Angst: Stacy quickly goes into the shower to wash off the word Slut which Matt and his friends had written (while she'd been asleep) on her belly.
  • Slashed Throat: This is how Matt and his friends are murdered when Stacy gets revenge on them along with her dead great aunts.
  • Slut-Shaming: Matt and his friends put Slut on Stacy's belly in marker while she's out to humiliate her, though ironically it's actually because she'd refused to have sex with him when drunk, as they clearly view it as the most cutting insult for her regardless of her behavior. After she gets angry with him for this, Matt says she's a slut to her face too.
  • Tickle Torture: Jess tickles Stacy so she'll dish about Matt to her.
  • Title Drop: In the film Shall We Play? is a game app which Stacy downloads for her, Emma and Jess.
