Secrets of an Actress is a 1938 romantic film directed by William Keighley and starring Kay Francis, George Brent, and Ian Hunter.

Fay Carter (Francis) is an actress who teams up with an architect, Peter Snowden (Hunter), who wants to become a producer. However, Peter's architect partner Dick (Brent) is less enthusiastic at first, but then he falls in love for her, setting up a love triangle. Complicating matters is Dick's estranged wife Carla, from whom getting a divorce proves difficult.

This film features examples of:

  • Awful Wedded Life: Dick and Carla are already separated, but she still doesn't make things easy for him.
  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Dick at first distrusts Kay and her association with Peter, but eventually falls in love with her.
  • "Friends" Rent Control: Yes, even in the '30s. Fay's apartment rent of $150 per month would equate to nearly $2,570 in the 2010's — still a bargain for a New York City apartment of that size and quality.
  • Love Triangle: Fay loves Peter, but she also falls for Dick after meeting him.
