'Seamstresses (original title: Шивачки) is a 2007 Bulgarian drama about Dora, Elena and Katya, three girls from the small village of Popovo, who arrive to the capital to find work as, well, seamstresses at a factory. Among hardships like poverty, cold, and predatory men, they are trying to survive.

Tropes featured in this movie:

  • Fan Disservice: The girls are attractive and each one is seen nude, but the context of those scenes (prostitution, drugs, emotionless sex, depression etc.) is not meant to arouse.
  • Gold Digger: Katya's a more nuanced case of this. She starts out by accepting the pimp's offer to become a prostitute, then gets into a relationship with the owner of the sewing factory and marries him.
  • Sex Equals Love: Elena hopes so when her flatmate Zacharis finally dumps his older lover to be with her. Dora has to show her that he's been sleeping with a new girl (who lives in the house and whom he passes off as his cousin) for months.
  • Shower of Angst: Dora has one after she lets her flatmate have sex with her. It's because she wanted a connection but knew he only uses her for sex and she only threw herself into it when she learned about Katya prostituting herself.
  • Town Girls: Dora is the Butch (strong-willed, serious and cynical), Katya is the Femme (the most feminine and the one who stars exploiting her sexuality) and Elena is the Neither (childish, optimistic and idealistic).
