In 1605 England, a small village is ruled in accord with contemporary religious conservatism, gripped by fears of witches. Evelyn is a young woman there, with her father a minister, and resistant to getting married though he feels it's past time. It's soon revealed she is secretly in love with Mary and seeing her, but this taboo relationship may endanger them both.

A short film (running at 25 minutes), it stars Bella Ramsey as Evelyn, having been praised as a result of its plot and their acting, along with her co-star Safia Oakley-Green's (who plays Mary). It's available on Youtube.

Tropes:

  • Burn the Witch!: Inaccurately, convicted witches in early 1600s England face being burned at the stake. In actual fact, the punishment in England was hanging (but Scotland did have burning). Mary is later burned for supposedly enchanting Evelyn into having been her lover.
  • Bury Your Gays: Mary, one of the two lesbians, is burned alive for witchcraft at the end, though her lover Evelyn survives to get revenge.
  • Closet Gay: Evelyn and Mary are both closeted, since in early 1600s England homosexuality is taboo.
  • Death Glare: Evelyn oozes venom in the gaze she fixes on her father after he makes her watch how Mary, her lover, is burned alive.
  • Forbidden Love: Any romantic/sexual love by two people of the same sex is utterly taboo, since it's early 1600s England. Evelyn and Mary must keep theirs secret because of this.
  • Forced to Watch: Evelyn is held back from intervening by her father and can only watch as her lover Mary is burned alive for supposedly enchanting her into them being together.
  • Heteronormative Crusader: The prevailing attitude of most people in early 1600s England is to view homosexuality as a dire sin.
  • How We Got Here: The film opens with Evelyn gazing hatefully at a man with fire shown in the background. After that, it's shown what led up to these events and what was going on.
  • Mark of the Supernatural: A woman in the village is accused of being a witch since dark markings appear on her arms, which is taken to be a sign of witchcraft. Evelyn, reasonably, suspects it's really bruises from her being mistreated by someone, though her father the minister brushes this off. She's convicted and burned regardless.
  • Out of the Closet, Into the Fire: After they're found to be lovers, Mary is accused of making Evelyn desire her by magic. She's burned at the stake as Evelyn has to watch helplessly.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: The ending has Evelyn and other women all burn down the village in revenge for them wrongly burning Mary among others as a witch.
  • Period Piece: The film is set in 1605 within a small English village, with the contemporary fear of witchcraft and strong homophobia spurring its plot.
  • Preacher's Kid: Evelyn's father is Minister Gilbert. She resists his demand for her to marry, and secretly sees another woman (this would have been viewed as gravely immoral in 1605 England, definitely against accepted Christian morals at the time).
  • Religious Horror: A Period Piece set in 1605 England during the witch hunts, exploring how any woman who in some way was suspicious or nonconforming (such as by being a lesbian) had to face the risk of a witchcraft accusation and the fate this brought.
  • Secret Relationship: Evelyn is secretly with Mary, another girl in their village. They must hide the fact since this is 1605 in England, with such a relationship forbidden.
  • Witch Hunt: Fear of witchcraft grips the village where the story is set in 1605, one woman there getting accused, convicted and quite soon burned as a result. Mary is then accused of witchcraft for supposedly having enchanted Evelyn, her lover, into being with her. She's burned at the stake.
