Following a heart attack, Matthew Connor (Lochlyn Munro) has to deal with his wife Lynn (Erin Karpluk) trying to force him to eat a healthier diet and his advertising business struggling having lost a couple of contracts but a sense of feeling in a rut and needing more rather than just settling for only okay.
He meets life gurus Diane (Jamie Luner) and his wife becomes suspicious of the new friendship with the guru.
Tropes present in Out of Reach:
- An Aesop: Don't be trusting of lifestyle gurus and be wary of what they offer.
- Broken Bird: A male variant, in that Matthew has a lot of stresses to go through at once, resulting in him using the guru Diane's services.
- Clueless Aesop: Although the moral is well-intentioned, because it's a Lifetime Movie of the Week, it's effectively not delivered very well due to the runtime (90 minutes) and not being sure how to deliver the moral.
- Ms. Fanservice: Downplayed, but Diane is attractive and uses it as a means of manipulating Matthew to join the cult.
