In times of yore, an avenging spirit was thought to inhabit old people.
A dark power that took possession of the frailest members of the clan.
And drove them into a seemingly blind rage.

Old People is a German Horror Movie by Andy Fletscher.

Ella (Melika Foroutan) is a divorced woman who's taking her children Laura (Bianca Nawrath) and Noah (Otto Emil Koch) to the wedding of her sister Sanna (Maxine Kazis) to her boyfriend Malick (Richard Manualpillai). While there, she also runs into her ex-husband Lukas (Stephan Luca), and his new girlfriend Kim (Anna Unterberger), and takes her kids to pick up her father Aike (Paul Faßnacht) so he can be in attendance. The wedding goes off without a hitch, and everyone turns in for the night.

However, it's not all happiness that night. For some reason, the elderly have suddenly started turning violent, attacking and killing every young person they come across. Soon the family find themselves huddled in the house trying to survive (except Aike, who's gone out to join the other elderly).

The movie was released on September 8th, 2022. It was distributed by Netflix on October 7th of the same year.

Old People contains examples of:

  • Antagonist Title: The elderly are the killers in this movie.
  • Big Blackout: At the end of the prologue, all the lights go out in the city.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Aike, Laura, and Noah have survived their encounter with the murderous old people, and have escaped with Alex to safety. However, Laura's, Noah's, and maybe Alex's parents are dead, and the area is still crawling with hostile old folks.
  • Bludgeoned to Death: Two examples.
    • In the prologue, one Mr. Reincke beats a woman to death with the bottom of his oxygen tank.
    • The Old Man kills Malick by beating him to death with a metal ball from an old post stuffed in his sock.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Early in the movie, Noah talks about old tunnels beneath the field leading from the house to the cottage. Noah, Laura, and Ella use them to escape the old people when they set the house on fire.
  • Duct Tape for Everything: When the family manages to subdue the Old Guy, they duct tape him to the stove.
  • Evil Old Folks: This is a movie about the town's elderly population going on a murderous rampage, so yeah.
  • Handguns: Ella pulls one out when the old people are surrounding the house.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: After realizing what she did, Kim saves Ella's life by throwing herself from the second story window to the old people so they'll kill her instead, allowing Ella to escape.
  • Kill the Lights: While it's not immediate, when the door to the cottage opens and the Old Guy walks in, the candles are blown out by the wind, which likely signifies how he's going to kill Sanna and Malick, who are having sex upstairs at the time.
  • Mama Bear: Ella goes ballistic on her father and the other old people when she can't find Noah.
  • Man on Fire: As Ella, Noah, and Laura seal the tunnel entrance shut behind them, a person covered in fire runs screaming in their direction.
  • Mondegreen: When talking about the old underground tunnels beneath the house, Noah says that the "butters" used to bring meals to the house through them from the cottage. He explains to his mom that the butters were the old servants, causing her to correct him that they were "butlers".
  • Off-into-the-Distance Ending: Aike, Alex, Laura, and Noah all ride off into the distance in a motorboat.
  • Sex Signals Death: As Sanna and Malick are consumating their marriage, the Old Guy comes up and attacks them, killing Malick first, and then Sanna.
  • Sinister Shiv: Some of the old people in the movie attack people by stabbing them with shards of glass.
  • Slashed Throat: Kim is killed by the old people this way.
  • Sock It to Them: The old guy takes a (presumably) metal ball off of what looks like an old bed post and puts it in his sock after entering the cottage Sanna and Malick are in. He uses it to kill Malick.
  • Spiteful Spit: The Old Guy spits in Lukas' face after being duct taped to the stove.
  • Sweetie Graffiti: When Alex shows off an old monument to Laura, he moves some grass aside to show a heart with her parents' initials in it carved into a rock at the base.
  • Token Good Teammate: Aike. Even though he's seen with the old people, he doesn't really attack anyone. In fact, in the end, he saves his grandkids by killing the Old Guy.
  • Trail of Blood: The male nursing home attendant leaves one of these when the old people drag him off-camera.
