Tropes for the film:
- The Cameo: Brutus Beefcake, Kamala, Jim Neidhart, George Steele, and Afa Anoaʻi all appear during the Dream Intro scene of the movie.
- Contrived Coincidence: It's awfully convenient that the man trying to steal Alex Mason's chip also happened to be the corrupt wrestling promoter who saw Sean blacklisted from the business.
- Double Standard: Violence, Child on Adult: Few gags depend on this. Some of the pranks that the two kids carry on on Sean include putting broken glass on his chair for him to sit on, using a supermagnet when he's working out to mess with his 200+ pound barbell before letting it fall down from the ceiling. He dodges it in time, but it could have easily killed him. They also rig a device to electrocute him in the bathroom when he steps out of the shower. Of course, it's played for laughs because of the use of Amusing Injuries.
- The Dreaded Pretend Tea-Party: Happens when Sean is forced to do this with the daughter.
- Empty Swimming Pool Dive: In the backstory, this is what happened to Tommy Thanatos. While fighting Sean, Thanatos accidentally ran off the roof of a building and landed head-first in the empty pool of the next door hotel. It would have killed him, but his afro cushioned the fall. Nonetheless, he needed to have a metal plate put on afterwards.
- Funny Background Event: During a short montage of Sean riding his motorcycle, a man can be seen throwing a dog into the ocean.
- Missing Mom: Alex Mason's wife passed away two years before the events of the film. Alex Jr. and Kate (especially Kate) are struggling to adjust.
- Punch! Punch! Punch! Uh Oh...: Sean punches Wolfgang three times and none of them phase him, Wolfgang promptly beats the crap out of Sean.
- Throwing the Fight: Sean has been blackballed from Professional Wrestling for refusing to throw a match.
- Use Your Head: In the climax, Thanatos uses his metal skull-plate to knock Sean around.
- Would Hurt a Child: Both Thanatos and his henchman Wolfgang strike Alex Jr. The latter causes Sean to get a Heroic Second Wind in order to defeat Wolfgang.
