  • Achievements in Ignorance: Hobbs barely knows how to sail, but takes his son Danny on a suspenseful yet exhilarating boating trip, then brings them right back to the pier when it seems like they've gotten hopelessly lost in the fog.
'Mr. Hobbs: Just so there won't be any misunderstanding, son... nobody was any more surprised than I was.
Danny Hobbs: Just like Christopher Columbus, huh, Dad?
  • The Film of the Book: Adapted from the 1954 novel Mr. Hobbs' Vacation by Edward Streeter.
  • Foreign Fanservice: The Hobbs' European neighbor Marika is wearing a new swimsuit in each of her scenes.
  • How We Got Here: A Framing Device has Mr. Hobbs dictating a letter to his wife complaining about everything that went wrong and telling her they should never go on another vacation like that. He has no intention of sending it, though.
  • Mum Looks Like a Sister: When she has enough makeup on, Mrs. Hobbs (Maureen O'Hara) looks very youthful and no too much older than her oldest daughter. Marika is astonished to find out that she's both a mother and a grandmother.
  • Pubescent Braces: 14-year-old Suzy Hobbs dislikes how her braces make her look and constantly keeps her mouth closed so no one will see them.
