Go To

The first in what would end up being a trilogy of movies produced by the Lifetime network about the love story of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, depicting the year between their first meeting and their engagement.

Provides examples of. . .

  • Black Gal on White Guy Drama: The couple gets hit with this hard once their relationship is revealed, with numerous tabloids and paparazzi making snide comments about their interracial relationship and even Harry's own family offering words of warning
  • Blind Date: The couple is set up on this by a mutual friend.
  • Blunt "No": Prince William's response when his father asks him if he thinks Harry's bluffing regarding his threat to tweet a statement condemning the racist attacks on Meghan—"No, I don't."
  • Blunt "Yes": Harry's response when his father asks "Is That a Threat?"? regarding his vow to personally tweet a statement condemning the racist attacks on Meghan if the palace doesn't put it out as an official one before angrily storming out.
  • Boorish Americans: Kate refers to this stereotype when William tells her that Harry's latest love interest is American—"Oh, no. They're so. . .loud". The next shot is of Meghan screaming her head off, but this isn't her personality at all, she's just squealing in response to having a huge snake wrapped around her.
  • Courteous Canadian: Harry lampshades this stereotype when several of Meghan's Suits coworkers (the show was filmed in Toronto) are incredibly rude to him at a Halloween party—"I thought Canadians were supposed to be super friendly."
  • Description Cut: Kate laments the news that Harry's dating an American woman, saying "Oh, no. They're so. . .loud." The next shot is of Meghan screaming her head off as a snake is wrapped around her.
  • Double Take: An initially disinterested Harry arrives late for his date with Meghan, barely even looking at her before pulling this upon seeing how beautiful she is.
  • Escape Call: Harry's bodyguard/driver abruptly interrupts his and Meghan's first date, claiming that there's an "emergency". Meghan mockingly asks "What kind of an emergency?', causing the other two to fumble awkwardly and for Harry to sheepishly apologize after he leaves. It's clear that this is a customary practice for them—he explicitly tells him "Give us a few minutes, then come in with my usual out"—but he wasn't anticipating actually wanting to continue the date.
  • Get Out!: Charles to two women making nasty comments to Harry regarding his relationship with Meghan:
"You've had too much to drink. You're making an arse of yourselves and embarrassing our whole family. It's time for you both to leave."
  • Is That a Threat?: The then-Prince Charles in regards to Harry declaring that he'll personally tweet his statement condemning the racist attacks on Meghan if the palace doesn't release it as an official one.
  • Love at First Sight: Harry's reaction when he sees Meghan.
  • A Minor Kidroduction: The movie begins in 1997 with a then-12 year old Harry and his brother and father arriving in Botswana, shortly after his mother's funeral, then comes upon Meghan as a little girl.
  • Race for Your Love: Meghan rushes to catch Harry before he leaves after she inexplicably breaks up with him over his efforts at defending her from the harassment she's been experiencing, having realized what a foolish mistake she made.
  • Scenery Porn: Harry takes Meghan to Botswana for their second date, providing the viewer with several minutes of gorgeous views of the landscape.
  • Starts with Their Funeral: In the opening sequence, Harry has a flashback of his mother's funeral.
  • Stiff Upper Lip: Why Charles rejects Harry's demands for permission to release a statement condemning the racist press attacks on Meghan.
"It's emotional. It's reactionary. It's not what we (The British Royal Family) do."
  • Time Skip: Following a few scenes of Meghan as a little girl, the story fast-forwards to 2016, finding Harry partying in a London nightclub.
  • Tranquil Fury: Prince Charles is perfectly calm when he tells two racist women making nasty comments to Harry "That's quite enough", but his anger is palpable.
