It was released on November 15, 2007.

Tropes for the film:

  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Jade/Amitiel is dark-haired, keeps to herself and does not want anyone's help.
  • Archangel Gabriel: The movie tells the story of an "Arc" Angel who fights to bring light back to Purgatory, a place where darkness rules, and save the souls of the city's inhabitants. He also wears a Badass Longcoat and a lot of firepower.
  • Archangel Raphael: Known for his leadership skills, the Archangel Raphael is impeded from fighting the war in purgatory only after he receives a near fatal bullet wound.
  • Agent Peacock: Asmodeus is an elite member of the Fallen, and also extremely vain and narcissistic.
  • Angels in Overcoats: Gabriel wears one.
  • Batman Gambit: Gabriel gets Uriel to reveal himself by stabbing him, and forcing him to use his powers to heal.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Asmodeus has been using his powers on a young woman to look like his true form. When Gabriel defeats him, he heals the woman to her original beautiful self.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Gabriel ends the film by jumping off the skyscraper, killing himself so he can live as a human, and understand what's happened.
  • Cast as a Mask: When reading Michael's letter, Andy Whitfield's voice plays instead to symbolise Gabriel reading it. This hides the twist that Michael is really Sammael.
  • Character Title: Gabriel, the archangel.
  • Combat Stilettos: Lilith is seen taking out Uriel from afar, while wearing high heels. Granted it's a ranged weapon she uses, so she must just have really good balance.
  • Crapsack World: Lucifer's forces have taken control of the movie's version of Purgatory. As a result, it takes the form of a filthy, corrupt, and impoverished city that is locked in perpetual night. Even archangels despair after spending too much time there.
  • Cue the Sun: Defeating Michael restores light to purgatory, and it's the only time the sun is shown in the movie.
  • Dark Action Girl: Lilith naturally. Dressed all in black, the only female demon shown, Does Not Like Men, and appears to be a Blood Knight.
  • Fallen Angel: It turns out Sammael is actually the angel Michael, having killed the real Sammael and assuming his identity.
  • Fallen-on-Hard-Times Job:
    • Amitiel was stripped of her wings, so now she has to be a prostitute.
    • Ithuriel downplays it. While he has turned his back on the mission, he's still running a soup kitchen to help people.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Asmodeus puts on a chummy, chatty front, but it's all an act.
  • Foreshadowing: Gabriel enters Michael's empty apartment and reads a letter from him, where he talks about how hard it is to stay pure in purgatory. Sure enough, the real Michael underwent a Face–Heel Turn before Gabriel's arrival.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: It wouldn't be right to set a 2000s film in purgatory and not have the demon characters wear some kind of black leather.
  • Hooker with a Heart of Gold: Quite literally. The call girl Jade turns out to be the angel Amitiel.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Gabriel's eyes are bright blue, to show him as the most morally pure character. Once he has to hide his angel identity, the eyes change to brown.
  • Meaningful Name: Amitiel goes by the new name Jade, and, true to her name, she has a rather cynical, hardened personality.
  • Men Use Violence, Women Use Communication: Amitiel beforehand was unique among the Arcs where she was valued for her ability to nurture and heal, rather than battle prowess.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Gabriel gives Asmodeus a really brutal beating. He's covered in blood by the end of it.
  • One-Word Title: Gabriel.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Asmodeus shows shades of this, referring to women as "bitches" who "come and go".
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Amitiel aka Jade has black hair, pale skin and is quite a looker.
  • Scary Black Man: Ahriman is the only Black member of the Fallen, and is especially creepy and sinister.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Each side has one female member. The Arcs have Amitiel, the Fallen have Lilith.
  • Too Dumb to Live: The archangel Gabriel; from the very first person that he meets onward he is constantly warned that using his powers will attract the attention of every bad guy in the city, letting them know exactly where he is. So what does he do? Why, he seeks out his fallen comrades who are in hiding and proceeds to use large quantities of his powers to "help" them, even when they specifically and emphatically tell him not to and yell at him for it after the fact.
  • Wretched Hive: The film's version of Purgatory is this in spades.
