Forgotten is a 2017 Korean thriller written and directed by Jang Hang-jun.

The father tells the family they must not go in a small bedroom upstairs because the previous occupant has temporarily stored his possessions in there. One day, Jin-seok witnesses his brother get kidnapped, only for him return 19 days later claiming to have no memory of the incident. Jin-seok begins to suspect that his brother is not the same as he once was. All the while, he continues to hear strange noises coming from the forbidden room.

Not related to the 2004 American film The Forgotten.

Tropes used in the film

  • Accidental Murder: Jin-seok killed a mother and daughter by tackling both of them in a fit of panic and accidentally stabbing each of them.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Jin-sook tortured Jin-seok to try to find out why he killed his family.
  • Cover Identity Anomaly: Jin-seok notices that Jin-sook is limping on the wrong leg.
  • Downer Ending: It's a Korean film, after all. Both Jin-seok and Yoo-seok commit suicide in the end.
  • Homage: To Bluebeard. Like the heroine in the story, Jin-seok is told never to enter a particular room in the house. Also, he's contacted by a man using the alias "Bluebeard" who hired him to murder his wife.
  • I Never Said It Was Poison: After following and then confronting his brother, Jin-seok realizes that he never told Jin-sook about taking a taxi, confirming that the events really did occur.
  • Repressed Memories: Jin-sook returns after getting kidnapped and can't remember what happened for the 19 days he was gone. The police say his mind has blocked out the traumatic memories. It's actually a lie. He was just arrested. Jin-seok, however, did block out the memories of the murders he committed.
