Tropes for the film:

  • Best Served Cold: Mr. Hobbs heists a diamond corporation's entire stockpile of diamonds to financially and professionally destroy not the corporation but their insurance underwriter, who decades ago sold medical insurance to poor folks including Hobbs, then refused to cover the cost of Hobbs' wife's medical treatments leading to her early death. Facing total ruin the insurance executive commits suicide never knowing he was the janitor's target. Satisfied, Hobbs allows the stolen diamonds to be recovered and disappears never to be found.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Done perfectly in the movie. Mr. Hobbs, the janitor, tells Laura Quinn the properties of the diamonds, one of them being that diamonds never dampen in contact with water. Later when the diamonds are stolen by Hobbs and Laura tries to find them, she loses a diamond earring in a sink and when she retrieves it, she notices that it is not wet. She then realizes that Mr. Hobbs had probably discharged the stolen diamonds into a sink, therefore the diamonds must be in the sewer.
  • Inside Job: The plot follows the plan of Hobbs, who after his many years attending to the place knows its every security flaw.
  • One-Word Title: Flawless.
  • Period Piece: Takes place in 1960.
  • Tagline: "He had a scheme. She had a motive".
