Two American tourists on a romantic camping trip are brutally murdered. A few days later, during the ancient festival of Samhain, a group of American university students moves into a beautiful cottage, surrounded by a lush forest and a majestic lake They are here to learn about the rituals of the ancient Druids and other Celtic legends. But in the remains of an abandoned copper mine, lives the descendants of an incestuous clan of cannibals. Stalked by a hulking, disfigured mutant, the students and their chaperone are in for the most harrowing time of their young lives. And keeping their heads on their necks will become their main concern...

Tropes:

  • Abandoned Mine: The Cannibal Clan dwells in an abandoned copper mine.
  • Advertised Extra: Jenna Jameson's appearance is hyped to the point of her receiving top billing. Her actual role is only a few minutes of screen time and has no actual bearing on the plot.
  • Ankle Drag: Barbara is grabbed by the ankles and dragged under the bed by the inbred cannibal hiding there.
  • Ass Shove: The Shape murders Gary by shoving his hand up Gary's ass and ripping out his intestines.
  • Breeding Slave: While attempting to escape the cannibal lair, Shae finds an American tourist (identified in the credits only as 'The Breeder') who has just given birth to a stillborn baby. She is being held prisoner so the cannibals can breed from her: the Cannibal Clan being so inbred that their females are now all sterile.
  • Camping a Crapper: The Shape ambushes Gary while he is throwing up into the toilet.
  • Cannibal Clan: The bad guys are an incestuous clan of cannibals (supposedly descended from Sawney Bean) living in an abandoned copper mine.
  • Cannibal Larder: The kitchen in the cannibals' lair is filled with human bodies in various states of decomposition. The Teaser even ends with a shot of Mark's torso rotating slowly on a spit over the fire.
  • Creator Cameo: The maggot-covered head found by Gary the caretaker is actually the head of the director, Christian Viel.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: The Shape shoves his hand up Gary's ass and rips out his intestines, and then uses the intestines to strangle him.
  • Crusty Caretaker: Gary, the caretaker at the cottage, is younger than the traditional crusty caretaker, but was born on Samhain and has psychic visions. He keeps lunging out unexpectedly at people to warn them in the most cryptic and ominous way to stay on the paths.
  • Don't Go in the Woods: The first people killed by the Cannibal Clan are an American couple camping in the woods. Later the Crusty Caretaker Gary keeps telling the students to not go in the woods after dark, and to keep to the paths. His concern seems a trifle misplaced as the cannibals have no issue with leaving the woods in search of victims.
  • Final Girl: Shae, the bookish brunette virgin is the only character to survive the onslaught of the Cannibal Clan. Lampshaded early in the movie when she is ranting about why she doesn't like horror movies and says that it is always the goody two shoes virgin who survives, and Jerk Jock Steve says that she should be safe then.
  • Food Slap: When Barbara gets sick of Steve teasing Shae, she dumps a glass of cold water in his crotch.
  • Frying Pan of Doom: Shae uses a skillet she finds in the cannibal's kitchen to beat the Shape to death.
  • Groin Attack: When the Shape attacks Pandora, she kicks him in the groin and makes a run for it.
  • Gutted Like a Fish: The fate of several characters. In particular, there is a scene where Jerkass Steve remains hidden and watches the Shape gut Pandora without making any effort to help her.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: During The Teaser, Amy's boyfriend finds her lying partially in the bushes, begging for help: her body obscured from the waist down. When he tries to lift her up, he discovers that she has been cut in half at the waist, and all of her intestines spill out on the ground.
  • Historical Character's Fictional Relative: The Cannibal Clan is supposedly descended from legendary Scottish cannibal Sawney Beane (although historians debate whether Sawney Beane ever actually existed).
  • Inbred and Evil: The villains are incestuous Cannibal Clan descended from Sawney Bean who are so inbred that they barely even look human anymore.
  • Jerk Jock: Steve, who seems to have no interest in the subject matter the group is in Ireland to study; spends most of the movie mocking and humiliating Shae; and is generally sexist and misogynist. He even talks through the movie the others are trying to watch.
  • Messy Maggots: When Gary goes looking for Karen, he finds her murdered body in the shed with maggots crawling out of her eyes and mouth (despite the fact there would have been barely enough time for flies to lay eggs in her body, let alone enough for them to hatch).
  • Off with His Head!: Steve is decapitated when he runs into a length of Razor Floss strung between two trees while running from the Shape.
  • Razor Floss: While fleeing from the cannibals, Steve runs into a length of piano wire strung between two trees with enough speed and force to decapitate himself.
  • Self-Offense: Shae hears someone coming around the corner in the mine tunnel and, assuming it is one of the cannibals, stabs them with a machete, only for it to turn out to be Paul.
  • Shower of Love: Barbara grabs Steve and drags him into the shower where they have sex.
  • So Much for Stealth: Steve attempts to sneak past the Shape while his busy gutting Pandora, but knocks over a pile of cans, alerting the Shape to his presence.
