Elvis Presley's 25th feature film, Clambake is a 1967 musical romantic comedy directed by Arthur H. Nadel.

Scott Hayward (Presley) travels to Florida, away from his oil tycoon father Duster (James Gregory), who expects his son to follow in his footsteps. Scott meets Tom Wilson (Will Hutchins), who's on his way to take a water skiing instructor job at a fancy hotel, and the two decide to switch places. At the hotel, Scott meets Dianne Carter (Shelley Fabares), who wants to hook a rich husband. Her target: millionaire playboy James J. Jamison III (Bill Bixby). Despite that, Scott and Dianne develop feelings for each other.

Tropes:

  • Conversation Cut: Scott and Tom are on a playground. Scott says he knows where he might get a boat (to compete in a race against James for Dianne's affections). Tom asks "For ten bucks?" Cut to Sam's garage, where Sam replies "Ten thousand would be more like it."
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: James challenges Scott to a karate bout after Scott interrupts his time with Dianne and takes a stance. Scott doesn't care and downs James with a single punch.
  • Faint in Shock: In the end, Scott reveals to Dianne that he's the scion of a wealthy oil baron. She thinks he's delusional, but when he proves it with his ID, she faints.
  • Gold Digger: Dianne is blunt about her goals to find a millionaire husband to Scott (whom she thinks is working class at the time). Scott is clearly disappointed, but they end falling for each other all the same.
  • Non-Idle Rich: Scott studied engineering and developed a coating called "goop" that's so sturdy, it makes it impossible to break a wooden guitar with a hammer. It doesn't do well in water though, but Scott tries to fix that problem so he can apply it to the boat he intends to pilot in a race.
  • Not with Them for the Money: Scott wants to find someone who'll be with him for himself and not for his wealth, which is part of the reason why he swaps places with ski-instructor Tom. Dianne, who's initially set on being a Gold Digger, falls in love with Scott and ends up abandoning her quest to be with him, only to find out he's loaded anyway.
  • Prince and Pauper: Millionaire Scott Hayward and water skiing instructor Tom Wilson swap places. For Scott, it's because he wants to prove that he can make something of himself without his inherited wealth. For Tom, it's just a chance to live it up a little. They look nothing like each other, but they're in a place where nobody knows them, so it doesn't matter.
  • So Proud of You: Scott and his father Duster argue about Scott's plan to apply an untested coating of his making to a racing boat Scott intends to pilot. Duster heatedly exclaims that whether it works or not, he's immensely proud of Scott.
