Brotherly Love is a 2015 American drama film written and directed by Jamal Hill. It premiered in theaters on April 24, 2015.

Cast

  • Keke Palmer as Jackie Taylor: the movie's teenaged protagonist and narrator
  • Cory Hardrict as Eric "June" Taylor, Jr.: Jackie's older brother who's caught up in street life
  • Eric D. Hill, Jr. as Sergio "Serg" Taylor:
  • Quincy Brown as Chris: Jackie's boyfriend from the hills
  • Romeo Miller as Sean
  • Logan Browning as Trina
  • Macy Gray as Mrs. Taylor, the Taylor siblings' widowed mother

Brotherly Love contains the following tropes:

  • Age-Gap Algebra: June is clearly not in high school and is surely a grown man, yet he's in a relationship with Simone, who's in the same grade as his teenaged sister, Jackie...
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Subverted with Jackie and Trina. Trina expresses attraction to him in the beginning of the movie and Jackie ends up in a relationship with him. This is a subversion however since they do not yet know of his true nature.
    • Played straight with June's girlfriend, Simone.
  • Best Friends-in-Law: Downplayed. Though they aren't married, June is in a relationship and shares a child with one of his sister Jackie's best friends, Simone.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Upon first meeting him, June takes a disliking to Chris because he's from the hill, and he forbids Jackie from seeing him.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Chris is this to the Taylor family.
  • The Cameo: Teyana Taylor makes an appearance as a hills resident during the confrontation between the two sides of the neighborhood.
  • Cassandra Truth: Mrs. Taylor, in a drunken stupor, offers one of these to Jackie after she sees her being dropped off from school by Chris.
"I don't know what you doing running around with that boy but he ain't sniffin' around yo ass lookin' for no roses!"
  • Cycle of Revenge: A recurring theme of the movie.
  • Doesn't Know Their Own Child: Chris never found out that Jackie was pregnant with his daughter.
  • Doesn't Trust Those Guys: Initially, June doesn't trust Chris. Turns out he was right not to...
  • The Heart: Jackie explains that Serg is the only person that can unite the entire neighborhood.
  • Let Off by the Detective: Serg is let off the hook by the cop who found him in the burglarized home.
  • Taking the Heat: Dez and Sean take all the blame for breaking into the house in the hopes that Serg wouldn't get caught with them.
  • Teen Pregnancy: Jackie discovers she's pregnant with Chris's baby.
  • Uptown Boy: Chris is this to Jackie.
  • Urban Segregation: Jackie explains that her neighborhood is divided into two sections: the hilltop and the bottom. Despite the fact that they all attend the same school, the kids from the hill tend to look down on the kids from the bottom because they have more money. Despite this, Jackie explains that they all experience the same kind of problems with drugs and crime.
  • You Killed My Father: Chris murders June because June murdered his cousin, Omar.
