- Barefoot Poverty: Björk can't afford new sports shoes for Birta, so Birta has to practice barefoot.
- Establishing Character Moment: Kim is first introduced with his big, loving family, in stark contrast to Birta & Kata's family.
- Family of Choice: Gréta & Jónsi like as surrogate grandparents to Birta & Kata, since their actual grandparents are never around.
- "Shaggy Dog" Story: Subverted. Birta takes all of her hard-earned money to the bank, but her wallet falls out of her pocket on the bus and she goes back home penniless. However, a man found Birta's wallet and gave it back to Björk, who wanted to surprise Birta.
