Big Muddy is a 2014 Canadian neo-western crime drama directed and written by Jefferson Moneo. It stars Nadia Litz as Martha Barlow, an outlaw living with her teenage son, Andy (Justin Kelly) as well as fellow outlaw and boyfriend, Tommy Valente (Rossif Sutherland). After they run afoul of local crime lord, Buford Carver (James Le Gros) Martha and Andy seek refuge at her father, Stan Barlow's (Stephen Mchattie)ranch while Andy's escaped convict father, Donovan Fournier, seeks to reunite David La Haye also features as Donovan Fournier, Andy's escaped convict father seeking to reunite with his family.
Big Muddy contains examples of:
- Anti-Villain: Martha Barlow may be a violent outlaw, but she truly cares about her son and her father despite their rocky relationship. She also leaves behind some money for the bar patron she and Tommy rob as compensation for Tommy's rough treatment.
- Asshole Victim: Tommy. Who does not survive his first encounter with Buford and his men.
- Bad People Abuse Animals: As if Tommy wasn't enough of a jerkass already, he decides it would be a good idea to shoot and kill the crime lord's prized horse.
- Big Bad: Buford. At first, he just wants to chase up Martha on a debt she owes him. Then he just wants to kill her after Tommy puts him in a foul mood by killing his prized horse.
- Even Evil Has Standards: Though it was her work, Martha does not seem pleased by Tommy's very amused reaction to seeing Daryll bound and gagged with his own socks. She's then so disgusted by Tommy taunting and needlessly pistol whipping him that she leaves some cash behind next to his unconscious body.
- Femme Fatale: Martha doesn't usually act like one, but she plays up this trope when she chats with her drunken mark at a bar Then he gets a little too handsy for her liking, and when he propositions her, she rejects him. Then she and Tommy tail him back to his home and rob him.
