Tropes

  • Action Survivor: Zoe is the only major character aside from Brody (who's wounded early on and is the film's resident annoying douchebag) to never even try to kill any monsters (although she throws rocks at some to distract them from Josh). Still, she has several close calls with the monsters (sometimes exposing herself to danger deliberately to help her friends) and survives due to a combination of luck, being able to climb trees, and absorbing Josh's warnings to stay absolutely still so that the creatures won't notice her when she doesn't have cover.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Zoe is the only blonde character and is polite to her ex-boyfriend, gets along well with the foreign exchange student her family is hosting, searches determinedly for said student after she disappears, helps Brody cope with his injured leg, and risks her life to draw the monster away from other people on multiple occasions.
  • Hunter of Monsters: James Murphy's first scene after the Distant Prologue establishes him as a Cigar Chomper with a cowboy hat, Badass Longcoat, and lots of hi-tech weaponry and equipment that he uses to hunt the Loch Ness Monster and its offspring to avenge the devouring of his father and to keep them from killing more innocent people. After he succeeds, he's jokingly asked if he plans to go after Bigfoot next, but replies that he's going to settle down peacefully.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Brody bullies Josh and gets more handsy than appropriate with Zoe early on. He also risks his life by throwing rocks at the monster to divert it away from Chad and compliments Josh during his efforts to bring Bring Help Back. However, when he thinks Josh died and won't be back, he loses that sense of gratitude and calls him a "pansy."
  • Never Trust a Title: Played with, The title is Beyond Loch Ness and while the creature is first seen in Loch ness, the majority of the film happens around Lake Superior.
  • Moby Schtick: James witnessed the monster kill his father and was left with a scar on his face, as an adult he has become a cryptozoologist and wants revenge on the creature.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Deputy Neil accompanies his boss for most of the film, has a personal beef against the mother monster after it kills his sister, and snipes several baby monsters in the climax, but he falls victim to the creatures five minutes before the end.
  • Sea Monster: Nessie is portrayed as an amphibious creature that migrates between various lakes, lochs and the ocean.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: A convulsed version occurs when Chad dies after shooting a Flare Gun at the monster as it attacks Brody (who attracted it by by throwing rocks at it after it cornered Chad a minute earlier). Brody dies later in the movie, largely due to the wounds he received trying to help Chad before Chad returned the favor, robbing both sacrifices of some of their meaning.
  • Stock Ness Monster: Nessie is portrayed as an amphibious-reptilian creature with a vaguely plesiosaur-like shape.
