Left to right: August and Clem
August finds that her daughter Ana has come home from college with a girlfriend. Surprised, it makes her recall her own relationship long ago with another woman during the late 1970s.

Tropes:

  • The '70s: August and Clem were secretly dating in 1978.
  • The Beard: August's husband, starting when they were just dating. Clem also pretends to find a guy attractive, saying they both "put up a front", secretly involved with each other at the same time.
  • Closet Gay: August and Clem were both closeted, secretly with each other but pretending attraction for guys too. When she got pregnant from her boyfriend, August and Clem's relationship ended, with her marrying him. She still hasn't come out many years later when her daughter's now grown.
  • Feminine Mother, Tomboyish Daughter: August is conventionally feminine, while her daughter Ana has quite the masculine style, dressing much like a boy with a ball cap, low-hung jeans etc.
  • Flashback: After her daughter Ana comes home with a girlfriend, August remembers how she'd dated a woman named Clem many years before, which makes up much of the film.
  • Hereditary Homosexuality: When her daughter Ana comes home with a girlfriend, August remembers how she'd secretly dated a woman years before, and is a closeted lesbian.
  • Love Confession: Clem confessed that she loved August in the past, who reciprocated.
  • Masculine–Feminine Gay Couple: Ana is a soft Butch Lesbian, with her girlfriend Nic (Nicole), being a Lipstick Lesbian. August, in both past and present, also had a feminine style. She once was with Clem, a woman who had more of a tomboy style.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Clem's full name, Clementine, is only said once.
  • Secret Relationship: August and Clem were secretly together years before, while both pretended they were attracted to guys.
  • Surprise Pregnancy: It's indicated August married her beard/boyfriend as a result of getting pregnant with their baby unexpectedly.
  • Tomboyish Name: August's daughter Ana says she's bringing home "Nic" after August assumes she'll be with a boy. It turns out that "Nic" is short for Nicole (though she's not actually a tomboy at all, in fact, while ironically Ana is fairly butch).
