American Flyers is a 1985 sports drama film directed by John Badham.
Marcus Sommers (Kevin Costner) returns to his family home in St. Louis after many years away. He desires to spend some time with his younger brother David (David Marshall Grant) and is at odds with his mother (Janice Rule) over how she dealt with his father's death.
The brothers then participate in a bicycle race called the "Hell of the West". Supporting them are a hitchiker named Becky (Alexandra Paul) and Marcus's girlfriend Sarah (Rae Dawn Chong). As the brothers participate in the three-phase race, they deal with family drama as well as a fatal familial ailment that threatens to derail them.
The film was a pre-stardom vehicle for Costner, and features a cameo by Belgian cycling legend Eddy Merckx
